and Fifth Regiment -- Minutemen -- Morgan's Raid.
Late on the evening of 8 Jul 1863, word came to Indianapolis that Gen. John H.
Morgan had crossed the Ohio near Corydon, IN. Gov. Morton issued his call forthwith,
and in forty-eight hours 65,000 men had answered the call. Thirteen regiments
were organized, numbered from One Hundred and Second to One Hundred and Fourteenth
inclusive.
The One Hundred and Fifth Regiment contained two companies from Henry and two
from Randolph; Union, Putnam, Hancock, Clinton, Madison and Wayne Counties, each
one company. Seven of the companies were of the Legion.
The regiment was organized 12 Jul 1863, Kline G. Shryock, Colonel, containing
713 men. They left instanter for Lawrenceburg. After marching around for several
days in pursuit of Morgan, and finding that he had gone eastward through Ohio
and beyond their reach, they returned to Indianapolis in just six days after
they had quitted it, and were mustered out 18 Jul 1965. Men from Randolph County
in One Hundred and Fifth Regiment: Company D -- . . . William E. GLOVER.
- William Edward GLOVER obituary, Winchester, IN Newspaper,
Winchester, Randolph, IN, 23 Feb 1898, 3. GLOVER, Wm. E., born 8 Oct 1831; died
17 Feb 1898; aged sixty-six years, four months and nine days. He was married
to Ruth Ann FRANKLIN, 1 Jul 1852. This union was blessed with nine children,
seven sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter preceeded him to the
spirit world. His wife died 8 Jan 1898. He enlisted in the service of his country
in 1864 in Co. H. 9th Indiana Volunteers Infantry, serving to the close of the
war. He has been quite a sufferer with the asthma for quite a number of years.
Just a few days before his death he told his daughter that he had been praying
to God for comfort and was satisfied and was ready to go and he knew he would
met his wife and children in heaven. He was converted in the year 1865 or 1864.
He leaves six sons, one daughter, twenty-two grandchildren, one great-grandchild
with many neighbors and friends to mourn his death. Funeral at Cherry Grove
by I. D. V. R. Johnson after which his body was laid to rest in the cemetery
to await the call of Jesus when we hope to meet.
