Poetry |
||||
|
Accessible
poetry conveys a recognizable situation, experience or feeling that triggers
a reader’s “ah” sensation. Ah, I know
what that’s like. Ah, that’s exactly
what I thought. Ah, I’m not the only
one who’s felt that way. The poet’s
poet who fills lines with obscure references and mythological imagery writes
for recognition by other poets. The
language poet who enjoys the juxtaposition of words and rhythms makes sound
and fury signifying nothing. The
dogmatic poet who pontificates condescends.
I’ve written my share of all those kinds of poems. Still do.
But if a poem doesn’t touch a reader, it doesn’t communicate and stir
an emotional response that makes an intimate connection -- whether serious or
humorous -- why is it being written and what purpose does its reading serve? The
following are samples of my work that have appeared (at times in slightly
different versions) in on-line publications. |
