NONOBADGOLF! My Pathetic Attempts to Learn to Play Golf

DATEDESCRIPTION
17 January 2002Today was the first day of golf class. We tried to hit balls. I missed.
31 January 2002We practiced hitting balls into hula hoops, I actually got one in yay!
05 February 2002First time on the practice putting green, the grass looked good enough to eat! Yum! Uhm ... yeah. Anyway, I did ok, I got some in, I missed most though.
14 February 2002Went to the driving range today for the first time. Used a 5 iron, most of my shots went pretty straight, about 100 yards. I think I was more relaxed than usual due to my having slept late and not having my usual high dose of caffeine. Made note not to do drugs before golfing. :P
20 February 2002I went to the driving range today, but I had to rent a club because I don't have any of my own, well, except for a putter. The only club they *claimed* they had was about 6 inches too long for me. Oh, well, I'm sure I provided some cheap amusement for the club staff while they watched my futile attempts to hit the ball. Out of a bucket of 85 balls I hit, oh, about 4 halfway decently.
21 February 2002Today in class we got to practice chipping. I realized that all golf balls look alike to me. I also realized that all golf balls do *not* look alike to people who pay $6 for a ball. Made note to bring some hideously colored balls with me next time I practice chipping.
23 February 2002I stopped on my way home from school today and bought a cheapo 5 iron, it's a junior size so maybe I'll actually be able to hit it! I also watched some golf tournament thingie on TV and noticed that I am not the only one who misses easy putts. This made me feel better.
26 February 2002Today in class we played golf! Only I couldn't cuz I had a class both before and after which gives me at most a total of ONE lousy hour to play 9 holes. Haha I'm no fool, I'm not gonna pay a greens fee for 2 1/2 holes (which is what class made it through by the time I had to leave.) But next week there is no school so maybe I will go play then with some people from class or just hook up with a group at the club.
27 February 2002I went to the driving range today with my dad. I brought a 5, 7 and 9 iron from school (really crappy ones too and too long for me but not hideously long) and my little cheapo 5 iron that I bought (the junior one.) I hit fair with the crappy irons, but kept topping the ball cuz I have a lousy habit of either lifting my head and/or body as I do my backswing or I tend to overcompensate for using a tee and I hate the range cuz there's *people* and they watch me! Hehe. But with the junior iron I did better and the ball went almost perfectly straight! Yay for perimeter weighting and oversized faces! Hehe. I actually hit better than some of the other people out there, but tended to hit a few too many grounders to second base. :O
28 February 2002Today in class we smacked some balls around and I got there early and did some chipping practice and putting practice, and I even tried out 'the claw' hehe. It did seem to help my putts some, especially long ones, go figure.
22 March 2002No I haven't given up golf ... yet. I was sick so I didn't play for a week and the rest of the time I just practiced putting and chipping which is hideously boring and not worth writing about. But yesterday I played golf yay! Well, 3 holes ... I only have an hour to play during class, but the teacher got permission to let us play for free so I didn't have to shell out money for greens fees for 3 holes. Unfortunately, I didn't do very well ... my best hole was 4 strokes on a very short par 3 (short as in about 100 yards) and the others were much worse. But I did manage to avoid trees and sand traps, so that's a good thing. :)
28 March 2002I played 5 holes today on that little short course we play on with my class. I did ok, I got my first par on one hole *beam*, 3 bogies and one double bogie. I need to practice more hehe. Only time I've been picking up a club lately is during class twice a week. I need to get my swing down so it's 'natural'; my aim is good, my distance is pretty decent given I'm a newbie. But I have a tendancy to pick my head up which usually results in my topping the ball which makes it go bloop! Sometimes I don't swing smooth either and I end up whackin' the ball off to one side or the other, or into a tree which is what I did on that double bogie today. But I'm improving so that's the important thing.
25 April 2002It's been a long time since I updated but it's not because I gave up golf, it's just that nothing eventful has happened. I play a few holes each week (since I only have an hour for class that usually means about 3-4 holes a week) and the other day of class each week I practice. Last week our teacher was in Jamaica playing golf so we didn't have class because we were sad she didn't invite us all along. <grin> Today we practiced on the putting green, there was a 'course' set up with string marking the boundaries - it was sort of like miniature golf - each 'fairway' was about 2 1/2 feet wide and some of the 'holes' had doglegs. It was a 9 hole 'course' and we played 3 times, I got 2 holes in one! Yay! Too bad it wasn't a real course. Oh well, I am getting better at putting and reading the greens, but I have a bit of a tendancy to undershoot, which I guess if you have to choose between under and over you're better off under.
