On the last moonless night of summer, when the air was still and warm, a tiny ebony creature was born in a far off jungle, but the kitten with the eyes of fire and sky was cursed, and abandoned by its tribe and sent away, cast upon the waters of the Sea of Io, never to be thought of again.

But the kitten was not about to give in to the darkness and the surf, but fought to stay alive, and just as dawn broke on the day when darkness and light trade places, she washed ashore, this time not by the rotted logs of dead trees where she had been sent on her way from the living to the spirit world, but in a small translucent cove, behind a cold stone building, in the strange and illusionary city of Phantasus.

The cold wet kitten struggled to open her eyes, blinded by the remnants of stinging seawater and the brightness of colors much more brilliant than anyone could ever dream of. When the dizziness left her for a moment, the kitten looked up and saw a dark, looming figure who said in a low, barely audible voice, "Come with me, I shall shelter you from all those who will harm you," and the figure whisked the tiny kitten away to a deep dark secret area in the newly discovered jungles of Kymer.

The kitten grew and came to know the jungle and to feel at home there. She discovered the clan of cats who had long ago abandoned her, and who treated her still as an outcast, for she did not speak their strange tongue and she walked like a shadow among the trees wherein they lived. So she became a solitary soul, wandering the jungle, observing passersby who seldom noticed her presence as she lurked in misty phantom form, a skill she learned so long ago it now seemed second nature. When all was quiet, she would go to the rock in the depths of the jungle that stood as a symbolic reminder of Morpheus, the god of dreams, for whom the city was long ago built. Here in this place she sought peace from her tormented mind as well as balance between her connection to the darkness of Phobetor, the one who had rescued her from the sea, and the light of Morpheus, the one who now protected the city in which she dwelled, and here she can be found on still nights when the air is warm and the magic ones come out from the mountains surrounding the city to perform their mind-twisting magic upon those who wander into their domain.
