Oakland, Oregon Oakland was founded in 1851 and has a population of 940. It was once the "Turkey Capital of America".  The modern broad-breasted turkey was first bred here. The downtown buildings were built in the 1890's after the original wood buildings were destroyed by fires. The Oakland historic district also has about 60 historic homes.
