ULICK STANTON was born 17 June 1841 probably in County Mayo, which is where the Irish Stantons originate.  A Ulick Stanton is listed on "Passengers to North America, 1800-1900" as arriving in Philadelphia, PA 1860.   We first find him listed on the census in 1870, in De Pere, Brown county, WI.  He died 22 Feb 1893 while working in the woods near his residence in Spalding, Menominee, MI, leaving a wife and 4 children. 

His parents were Michael and Bridget STANTON.  The family story is that he was an orphan and raised in a Welsh orphanage.

He married about 1872 Rose MCNELLIS.  She was the daughter of Dennis MCNELLIS and Catherine CARR. They had 6 children:

• Martin STANTON (14 Sept 1873 DePere, WI - 5 Sept 1895 Spalding, WI)
• John Fred STANTON (27 Jul 1875 DePere, WI - 6 Mar 1923, Ripley, Houghton, MI) married 30 June 1903 Rose Prince.  They had 7 children.
• Daniel STANTON (10 Aug 1877 DePere, WI - 25 Sep 1877 DePere, WI)
• Dennis STANTON (Jul 1878 DePere, WI - 13 Jul 1894 Spalding, Menominee, MI)
• Mary (Mayme) STANTON (8 Dec 1881 DePere, WI - 5 Jan 1970 Milwaukee, WI) She married 18 Mar 1909 Frederick Phillips.  They had 4 boys.
• Rose STANTON (17 Dec 1888 Spalding, Menominee, MI - 1 May 1977 Duluth, MN) She married 20 May 1916 Charles Anderson.

Dennis MCNELLIS was probably born about 1820 in Glencolumbkill, County Donegal, Ireland . He probably arrived in Pennsylvania in the 1840s. He first appears in the census for Cass twp, Schuylkill, PA in 1860 already married to Catherine.  He married Catherine CARR 4 Dec 1849 at St Vincent de Paul, Minersville (near Pottsville) Schuylkill, PA.  The family moved to DePere, Brown county, WI in the 1860s, to Foster City, MI in 1883, and finally to live with daughter, Nellie James in Houghton before 1890.  He  died 19 Jan 1891 in Escanaba, Menominee, MI 

Catherine CARR was born 1828 County Derry, Ire and died 14 May 1899 Houghton, MI.  Her parents were Condy and Rose (CURRAN) CARR.

Their children were:

• Mary McNELLIS (18 April 1853 Schuylkill, PA - 14 July 1926 Detroit, MI) She married abt 1885 Thomas Robbins and had 4 children.
• Rose McNELLIS (abt 1855 Schuylkill, PA - 24 Oct 1913 Duluth, MN) She married abt 1872 Ulick Stanton. They had 6 children.
• Ellen (Nellie) Theresa McNELLIS (28 Mar 1857 Schuylkill, PA - 27 Oct 1943 Glenview, IL) married 14 Sept 1886 John Richard James.  They had 2 children.
• Catherine McNELLIS (30 Oct 1859 Schuylkill, PA - 20 July 1932 Newberry, Luce, MI)  married 1876 Emmery Wells and they had a daughter, Katherine Wells (10 Dec 1879 Foster City, Dickinson, MI - 2 Feb 1958 Escanaba, MI).  She married second 1893 John Dean.
• Daniel McNELLIS (1863 - 1875 Wilson, Menominee, MI)

Notes:

I suspect that Neil McNellis was a brother of Dennis McNellis.

Neil McNellis 1838 Donegal, Ireland – 1907 Marinette, WI married about 1862 probably in Ireland to Bridget.

His obituary:  Deceased was a native of Ireland having been born in DONEGAL, 69 years ago.  HE REMOVED to MARINETTE from DePere 18 years ago (1889?).  He is survived by his wife and 6 children.  Mrs. NEIL BONNER, MRS. A. J. Burney of Escanaba; Misses Susie and Margaret McNellis of Marinette. Frank and James McNellis of Woodlawn , MI .

I suspect that Charles Carr is the brother of Catherine Carr, wife of Dennis McNellis.

Charles Carr b 1824 Ireland - before 1900, WI, married about 1860 in Schuylkill, PA to Margaret.  Lived near and moved with McNellis families from Schuylkill to DePere, WI and then to Marinette, WI.  Margaret's mother, Mary, born about 1800 in Ireland is a widow and lives with them.  She lists her surname as Doherty and then McNellis.

Possible other family members:

Frank Carr born 1844 in Ireland married Catherine McCue in DePere, WI August 1871.  His parents were Patrick and Mary Carr.   DePere News – Ulic Stanton killed Feb 22, 1893, Wilson , MI   “Mrs Stanton is related to C. McCue of DePere”

DePere News - McNellis, Neal of Ireland married Mary Patten 22 Aug 1871 in DePere, WI.  Witnesses: James Doherty and Rose McNellis (later married Ulick Stanton).  His parents were Peter & Ellen McNellis.  Hers were James & Suzanne Patten.
