These are the 5 principles of Reiki. But what is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese word that—in the context of energy medicine—means 'Universal Life Energy'. There are several beliefs regarding its origin. Some believe it is a surviving art from the fabled continent of Atlantis. Others believe that it is the very same miracle that Jesus Christ himself performed. More commonly, however, it is generally established that Reiki has been created in India thousands of years ago and then lost over time, only to be re-discovered in the early 1900s by a Japanese man named Sensei Mikao Usui. Mikao Usui was a very learned man who sought to learn the true technique of natural energy healing. When he was finally enlightened to its existence and was given the ability to perform it he was on a spiritual retreat on Mount Kurama in Japan. When he returned, Usui started treating numerous people using his new gift (which he named 'Reiki') and has gained a reputation for performing many miracles. Before his passing away, Dr. Usui taught the ability to perform Reiki (a process known as 'attunement') to his close friend Chujiro Hayashi, who in turn taught it to a Hawaiian woman named Hawayo Takata. It was she who brought Reiki to the west and whose students have been spreading it throughout not just the USA but throughout the entire world.
So what are the benefits of receiving Reiki?
In today's world stress and anxiety can have a serious weakening effect on our bodies and especially our immune system, which is what Reiki is so good for! Reiki is first and foremost a relaxation technique. It always brings about a deep sense of peacefulness, relieves anxiety, and helps reduce stress and tension. However, a person receiving Reiki canand often doesreceive even more than that. When the Reiki practitioner (that would be me) gently lays his hands on the recipient, they summon positive life energy from the universe to flow into the recipient, enhancing their body's own natural healing and regeneration. This warm, healing, natural energy can clear any blockages or imbalances in a person's energy flow and helps them achieve detoxification and revitalization. It is a holistic form of complementary medicine (and therefore not meant to replace orthodox healthcare) which has been known to help patients with any physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues that they may have. Reiki is also excellent at relieving various pains, whether acute or chronic. It can improve sleep and rest. It enhances the beneficial effects of any medication while supressing its associated unpleasant side effects. It even enhances our mood, giving us a more positive outlook!
And what does a Reiki treatment entail?
Well, all the patient really needs to do is lie down on a Reiki table and make themselves comfortable! I will do the rest. I provide a stepping stool for shorter patients to help them climb onto my Reiki table, which in itself isn't too far off the ground, and can accommodate taller people. I provide pillows for resting the head and knees, and blankets if anyone starts to feel cold. I like playing soft, gentle music to help enhance the mood. The patient always lies fully clothed (minus shoes, glasses, and all metallic jewelry) on the table. There is never any sexual or inappropriate contact made. Reiki can also be practiced from a distance and that is how it is channeled towards sensitive areas of the body (from anywhere between an inch away to all the way from across the room, and even further.) I only ask that patients do not wear any cologne or strong scents to the Reiki sessions because senses can get heightened during the treatments, and many individuals can be sensitive or even allergic to the lingering aroma. I also ask that no caffeine, alcohol, drugs, or anything highly sugary be ingested within an hour of a Reiki session.
