The Burnt Hills and Big Flats hosts a monthly operating session for local model railroaders. Sessions last from 7PM to approximately 10PM on the third Friday of the month. Sessions are announced to Tri Cities Model Railroader members at the monthly business meeting, but one does not need to be a member of the TCMR club in order to participate on the BH&BF.

The BH&BF is controlled using Digital Command Control by Easy DCC, so there are no tough control panels to learn. The vast majority of turnouts are manually controlled by pushing the points over with your finger.

Operating crew size can be up to nine people. Four or five mainline operators, two yard operators, a yard master, and a dispatcher. A 4:1 fast clock is used (not to pressure operations, but with two separate rooms, some coordination is needed and common timing).
