Mayfield Yard is operated by up to 3 operators during an operating session. There is a switcher for the Main Yard (9 double ended tracks), which handles northbound traffic. There is another switcher for the Coal Yard (4 stub ended tracks) which handles southbound traffic. Southbound traffic are primarily handled by local switching crews which service the many interchanges and coal mines in the Scranton area. There is also a Yardmaster to coordinate the operations of the two switchers, and to control train movements within the Mayfield Yard limits.

All times are per a 4 to 1 fast clock. As the total sequence for the BH&BF takes four real hours, and operating sessions usually run for two hours, the schedule has been split into first shift and second shift. Cars are assigned to trains on the basis of the color of the color-coded-tack that has been place on the car.
