Environmental Classes

Our classes provides information on the plants and animal life found in our area, as well as, insight into the value of preserving this habitat.  We offer programs for School Field trips, Home School groups, Preschool groups, Boy Scouts, clubs and other types of groups.  Please make an appointment for all programs. Note: that we recommend good walking shoes and sunscreen.

Fees for School Field Trips   

$1.00 per student for a single program

$4.00 per student for a complete morning, includes 2-3 programs and free time for picnic lunch, etc...

All scheduled programs include handouts, a hands on activity and/or art project and a nature walk.

What Is A Forest?

This program is an interactive on the forest that make up the United States. The kinds of trees that grow  in our forests, the forest structure, why do animals and humans depend on forest?   Discus  the importance of forest and how they are interconnected to life on Earth.

Leaf Identification

Learn leaf characteristics on a walk while collecting different types of leaves.  Make a leaf collage poster to reinforce leaf identification or leaf rubbings.  How to spot a poisonous plant and how to avoid them.  How to spot an herb, fruit and vegetable  plant.

Insect Identification

Learn about the insects that can be found in our area.  What they eat, what activities they like to do, What their life is like.   Take a walk around the gardens and by the ponds to see who is living here with us and how their ecosystem fits into our world.   

 

 

 

 

Bird Identification

Learn about the birds that can be found in our area.  What are bird flyways?  Learn about the types of foods that they eat and make a bird feeder.  Take a walk around thru the gardens to the ponds and out to "Camp Duck" to quietly observe the birds living here and how their ecosystem fits into our world.

How to Grow A Plant

A hands on learning of the many ways to grow a plant.  Learn about  seeds, bulbs, cuttings and dividing to create a new plant.  What a plant needs in order to grow.

Water & Soil Conservation

We will identify the three soil types.  Learn about erosion and how to prevent and slow the process.  Perform a soil experiment and see how to make compost.

Natures Crafts

We will collect items found in nature and bring them back in after our walk to make a variety of arts and crafts.  We will do leaf rubbings, animal tracks, seed pod pictures, pine cone art, chestnut critters and pressed flowers to name just a few ideas.
