The Assault is a Micro Electric sport plane that gives good performance. Average building time is 20 hours. The model was designed and is available from Bill Griggs, RR2 Box64, Canastota, NY, 13032. The model comes boxed in only a shipping carton. The few plywood parts are laser cut. The balsa is of good quality. The plans and instructions are complete. Construction begins with the wing. Spars are webbed 1/8" spruce. Ailerons are cut from the 1" trailing edge after the wing is built. The wing appears very fragile but the covering adds the needed strength. The fuselage is standard construction, using plywood formers with 1/16" balsa sides. There is an option of firewalls depending on the engine selection. The Assault was covered with Ultracoat. Final assembly was simplified because the BGM recommended and supplied items were installed. There is plenty of room in the fuselage to install the motor, speed control, battery pack, and servo. There are a couple of areas of concern. Aileron differential is required, i.e. plenty of up aileron with very little down. This was accomplished by using an off center servo horn. Second, elevator travel must be limited. There is only 3/16" up and 1/16" down travel and this is sufficient. The supplied 7 cell, 600 mah battery was also used. The first flight was conducted on a calm morning. The model flew perfectly with no trim required. The power off glide was very comfortable. The initial flight lasted approximately 6 minutes. Additional flights have gone equally as well. The Assault is a pleasure to build and fly. Using BGM supplied items, success can be expected and achieved with the Assault. |
