BUILDING HISTORY--1889

16 Feb 1889: Mr. A. Splendor, a friend
of our barber, PJ Conery, has leased the lot belonging to Reinhard & Klug and
will erect a building thereon to be used as a basket factory.
23 Feb 1889: A. Splendor putting factory on P. Runkel land not
Reinhard & Klug.
2 Mar 1889: John Wolf had stone hauling bee for foundation of a
new house. Frank Heinig began working on a new blacksmith shop next to
Dauffenbach’s meat market which is twice the size of his old shop.
9 Mar 1889: A. Loesch is building a new granary for Mr. Coleman
on Grove Prairie, using lumber from his old tobacco shed. F.H.
Dauffenbach, having sold the building he now occupies as a furniture store,
will build a larger and more commodious one in the near future. PJ
Conery has purchased the store building of F.H. Dauffenbach and will move it
onto a lot on the north side where it will be occupied as a fancy store and
barber shop.
16 Mar 1889: A. Kuhlman has his tobacco shed torn down and work
on a new granary began. Albert Bussewitz will build a new house the
coming spring. Albert Wille intends to build an addition to his house
this spring. Frank Heinig is now comfortably located in his new shop.
23 Mar 1889: John May will begin work on his new house the first
of the week. John Connolly sold 40 acres to Reinhard Steindorf for $1620
east of town.
30 Mar 1889: Charley Kading has moved the old cider mill and is
going to make a stable of it. A.H. Bussewitz has moved his old house off
the foundation preparatory to putting up his new one. Philip Runkel has
placed a fence of wire netting along the south a part of the front side of his
lawn.
6 Apr 1889: Work on the new parsonage is underway.
13 Apr 1889: J.J. Solon has papered his saloon.
27 Apr 1889: G. Shank has completed his new house. F.
Dauffenbach has added a coat of paint to his new house. Carpenters at
work in Grove Prairie on A.H. Bussewitz’s new house.
4 May 1889: Thomas H. Newman has been building a large story and
half addition to his house.
11 May 1889: Work on the parsonage is now under full headway.
It will be a 2 story structure.
22 June 1889: Mr. Tobin’s house south of town caught fire from a
defective chimney last Sunday but the flames were quickly extinguished.
27 July 1889: Charles Bruecher has contracted to build a new
school building in Elba District #2.
10 Aug 1889: A 12 x 24 foot addition is being built onto the
Loesch house. A. Loesch is doing the work. The upper part of Mr.
Etscheid’s shop is being overhauled and fixed up and will be occupied by
Robert Etscheid as a dwelling.
17 Aug 1889: M.Galitz house south of here destroyed by fire last
Friday. Insured by Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. George Runkel is
putting up a new granary. Philip Runkel has put up a neat little coal
shed on the east side of his engine room. Philip Runkel has had a
threshing engine put into the elevator (to work till spring).
24 Aug 1889: C. Reinhard has been putting up a new buggy shed and
wood house.
7 Sept. 1889: Last Wednesday lightning struck the D.B. Holt barn
burning it down with valuable livestock.
14 Sept. 1889: A party of bridge carpenters have been repairing
the railway bridges near here during the past week. Wackling Bros. have
bought the lots where W.H. Snow’s store formerly stood and will put up a
saloon and dance hall.
21 Sept. 1889: R. Etscheid and A. Loesch painted the elevator
roof. The lumber for the new saloon and hall is on the ground and
carpenters will commence work.
28 Sept. 1889: The masons and carpenters are now at work on the
new saloon and hall.
5 Oct 1889: New hall is pretty well erected. 25 x 52 foot
with 11 feet from first floor to ceiling. Upper story to have arched
ceiling 14 feet high in center.
12 Oct 1889: A new barn is being erected on the German Reformed
parsonage premises. J.J. Solon’s saloon building had new shingles put
on.
19 Oct 1889: The glass front has been placed in the Wackling
Bros. new building. A.H. Bussewitz is having his new house painted and
decorated. Herman Schroeder is making preparations to build a 30 x 50
foot barn. The basement work in completed.
2 Nov 1889: Wackling Bros. new saloon will open Tuesday or
Wednesday next week.
16 Nov 1889: A barn and some stacks of fodder belonging to
Charles Klentz were burned last Sunday. Origin is unknown. M.H.
Green commenced work on basement of his new creamery east of the depot on the
railroad grounds. The building will be 32 x 50 feet and equipped with
the latest machinery for buttermaking.
23 Nov 1889: Philip Ruedig is having a hardwood floor laid in his
saloon.
30 Nov 1889: New sidewalks in front of S. Woodward and William
Reinhards.
