BUILDING HISTORY--1890
(taken from the editions of The Reeseville Review)

4 Jan 1890:  At last meeting of village board it was decided that a jail should be built.  It will be placed on C.A. Buss’ lot in the rear of his shop.

15 Feb 1890:  Fire at Adolph Roth’s place 2 miles south of town shortly after 7 pm Monday.  Flames seen coming from barn roof.  Horses, cattle and sheep released.  Some machinery taken out.  Adjoining buildings and stacks destroyed.  Loss:  2-3 week old hay in barn, barn, large amount of wheat, barley, oats, a number of farm tools.  Cause believed to be spontaneous combustion.

22 Feb 1890:  Adolph Roth is hauling lumber this week, preparatory for building a new barn.  P.W. Kohn has erected a new machine shed between Wekerlings and P. Reinhards places of business where he will exhibit and work in the interest of the Walter A. Wood machines.  Work on the new jail is now in progress.

1 Mar 1890:  Portland—Frank Boldt intends to build a new barn this summer.  To be 34 x 54 feet.

22 Mar 1890:  The farmers in the northeast part of the Town of Portland have formed a stock company and are about to build a cheese factory.

29 Mar 1890:  Will Fox purchased 45 acres of the Carroll farm for $1800.

12 Apr 1890:  C. Knarr has been building an addition to his house.  New stoop added to Weckerling’s saloon.  New sidewalks have been placed by C. Knarr, Thomas Newman, William Dauffenbach and Frank Heinig.

25 Apr 1890:  A.E. Wekerling put up a new sidewalk on Second Street.

3 May 1890:  August Wolter to build a new house in the village this summer.

10 May 1890:  The new meat market opened up for business this morning.  C. Reinhard added ornamental porch to his house.

17 May 1890:  The Anhauser meat market is now in full running order.  A new addition is being built to William Etscheid’s house.  F. Heinig has put up a new shed for storing place for his stock of buggies and wagons.  H.M. Green’s new creamery is nearly completed.

24 May 1890:  The removal of a number of fences has added greatly to the appearance of Main Street.  H.M. Green’s new creamery goes operable on Monday.  Fred Etschedi is having a lumber yard shed erected on his lot on S. Main Street.  Charley Bruecher is doing the work.  New sidewalks for D. Wright and A.D. Coapman.

14 June 1890:  Robert Etscheid and Charles Ruedig painting S. Woodward’s house.

21 June 1890:
  New sidewalks in front of the P. Kaulbach residence.  Etscheid and Ruedig painting C.W. Weber’s house.  New porch added to the Wekerling building.

28 June 1890:
  Robert Moore has put up a small tower at the rear of his store on which he will display sample windmills.  William Baker on the south side of the village has built an addition to his house, a new picket fence, and a paved stone sidewalk.

6 Dec 1890:
  Aug. Wolter’s new house has been painted.
