BUILDING HISTORY--1895 11 Jan 1895: Bickel Bros. new store building is nearing completion. H.A. Berschneider sold the North 22 feet of Lot 5, Block 6 for $450 to Wille Bros., who are putting up a new 44x50 foot, 2 store store. Emil Maaske sold one-half of Lot 17, Block 3 for $106 to William Rauschenberger who expects to move his wagon shop to the lot. 18 Jan 1895: A. Loesch is nearly finished with the 22x46 foot, 2 story frame of J.J. Solon's new bank. 1 Feb 1895: ___ Klantz purchased one of the lots on Garfield and is to put up a new residence. 8 Feb 1895: William Rauschenberger is about to put up a new shop on the lot he bought from Emil Maaske. 15 Feb 1895: Fred Acker and Fred Jacobs are repairing the fire damaged portion of the P. Keaveny building. Stone is being hauled for the foundations of Berschneider's and Wille's buildings. John Roller is drilling at C. Reinhards--down over 100 feet. The frame work of William Rauschenberger's building is up and enclosed. Is 2 stories tall. 22 Feb 1895: William Rauschenberger's new wagon shop is now complete. John Roller is drilling a well at the J.J. Solon residence. 8 Mar 1895: The new bank building will soon be ready for occupancy. Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Snow have moved into their new home. John Roller has completed a new well for F. Piper. 5 Apr 1895: S. Woodward is adding living rooms to his building on S. Main Street. 19 Apr 1895: A.J. Kohn is at work on the foundation for a new store building. New sidewalk has been installed in front of the Opera House and in front of F. Heinig's blacksmith shop. 26 Apr 1895: The frame of A.J. Kohn's new building is up and enclosed. Work on Berschneider's foundation is progressing rapidly. Oscar Swanitz painted his shop. 3 May 1895: Bickel Bros. new building is receiving a coat of paint. 17 May 1895: William Klantz's new house is up and enclosed. C.W Weber put a wood awning on his store front. 7 June 1895: The wall of Berschneider's and Wille Bros.' new block is completed and work will commence at once on the framework. 14 June 1895: George Roth is painting his house. The foundation of the new church is completed and carpenters will soon start work. The framework of Wille and Berschneider places will probably be up and partially enclosed by tomorrow night. 21 June 1895: The village pharmacy is painted. Fr. Scheele lost his barn and farm machinery to fire last Saturday. Was fully insured. Fire destroys the barn, outbuildings, some machinery, hay and grain on the A. Reinhard farm. 28 June 1895: The new Bickel building is completed and to be occupied by the A.H. Budewitz saloon. 5 July 1895: C.W. Steinacker has purchased the Swanitz house of H.A. Berschneider and has moved it onto a lot on the east side of the lower end of South Main Street. 12 July 1895: F.H. Dauffenbach is giving his building a fresh coat of paint. Charles Ruedig is having a new front put on his place of business. 26 July 1895: The front of Charles Ruedig's place is completed and painted. Carpenters are at work on the Lutheran church and the frame will soon be up and enclosed (32x50 foot structure). William Miller's barn, grain and threshing machine were destroyed by fire. 16 Aug 1895: Wille Bros.' new block is rapidly nearing completion. H.A. Berschneider has about completed the foundation for another new building. 23 Aug 1895: Keaveny and Ruedig painted the school. 30 Aug 1895: The framework of Berschneider's new building is up and about to be enclosed (24x50 feet, 2 stories). 6 Sept 1895: H.A. Berschneider's new store will soon be in the hands of the painters and masons. The foundation for a new city hall is about complete and the framework will follow. George Roth and gang of men have the framework up and enclosed for John May's new house. Otto Dauffenbach and family now occupy the home vacated by F. Heinig. 13 Sept 1895: Otto Klug purchased the George Runkel farm between Lowell and Reeseville for about $9700. 20 Sept 1895: Lumber for the new city hall is here and the frame is going up as fast as possible. Charles Breucher is the contractor and is helped by his sons, Fred and Louis, and by Frank Grant. H.A. Berschneider's new 2 story business is progressing rapidly under the supervision of contractor, A. Loesch. Wille Bros.' meat market is about ready for occupancy. Roth and Acker have completed work on the Lutheran Church until the masons are done plastering. George Roth and Christian Kuntz are rushing work on John May's new farmhouse. 27 Sept 1895: About 60 acres of the Th. Boyle estate were sold to Lawrence Cawley for $2300. 60 acres of the Christian Kuntz farm were sold as follows: 20 acres to Adolph Roth for $87.50/acre; 20 acres to John William Kohn for $92.50/acre; and 20 acres to G.W. Kohn for $100/acre. 4 Oct 1895: John Kohn sold 120 acres in section 13 of the Town of Portland to Gustav Huebner for $7100. Ed. Tobin sold 70 acres in the village to John Kohn for $7000. John Kohn sold the following village lots: Lot 25, Block 2 to Chr. Reinhard for $150; Lot 26, Block 2 to C.W. Steinacker for $150; Lots 6 and 7, Block 8 to J.W. Griffin for $200. Work on the vault in the new bank is being pushed as rapidly as possible. C.W. Steinacker has about completed the foundation for an addition to his dwelling. 11 Oct 1895: The lockup has been moved to make room for the old Weber store building., which has been purchased by Griffin Bros. and is being moved onto the back end of their lot for a warehouse. Intend to move the old lockup to the rear of the new city hall and use it as a tool house. Fisher and Stock have been adding a room to their shop by raising the roof and making a store room on the second floor of the rear part. 18 Oct 1895: Christian Kuntz is raising the foundation and doing other improvements around his residence. Chas. Steinacker's residence is being overhauled, remodeled, and a new addition is nearing completion. The bank building is being painted in and out. 25 Oct 1895: Christian Kuntz is preparing to build a 2 story addition to his residence. The new city hall is nearing completion and will be turned over to the painters in the next 3 weeks. Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Fischer are now in rooms over the new store of H.A. Berschneider. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hastings are now located in the upper rooms of the Keaveny building. A.F. Duckerschein is now occupying the residence next south of his business. 1 Nov 1895: Fire gutted Runkel and Kohn's saloon on Monday evening. The damage was between $600 and $800 and was covered by insurance. The rear portion was entirely consumed, the interior was gutted but the fire department saved the rest. Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Miller are now located in the Reinhard house on the east side of South Main Street. H.A. Berschneider and family have moved into rooms over his new business. 8 Nov 1895: Carpenters expect to have work completed on the city hall by tomorrow night. Carpenters are at work repairing the recently fire damaged Runkel and Kohn saloon. Christian Kuntz has about completed the foundation for his residence addition (14x24 feet, 2 stories). The new Lutheran church is to be dedicated on November 24th. 15 Nov 1895: Work on H.A. Berschneider's new building has been completed. 22 Nov 1895: Keefer and Wilske have moved into new quarters. They are now converting their barber business in the Conery building. 29 Nov 1895: Runkel and Kohn's saloon is again very nearly ready for occupancy. Carpenters and masons have finished--now just the painters. Interior and fixtures of E.B. Fischer's new store building are rapidly nearly completion. Most of these are in oak. J.J. Solon is fitting up and office in one of the rooms on the second floor of the bank building next to the Review office. 13 Dec 1895: A.J. Kohn has sold his saloon on N. Main Street to Christian Steinacker for $6000. 27 Dec 1895: Christian Kuntz has the framework to the new addition to his house about completed.
