BUILDING HISTORY--1896

6 Feb 1896:  Christian Kuntz has the carpenter work on his new house addition nearly complete.  Is ready for the masons and painters.  Wille Bros. are putting up a new barn at the rear end of their lot on South Main St.

13 Feb 1896:  The city hall is to receive a coat of paint.  Dr. D.A. Schumacher has rented the Hagman house east of the depot.

5 Mar 1896:  William Dauffenbach is painting his business interior.  Charles Clark of Lowell is painting the city hall.  The old wood awning has been removed from the Keaveny building.  Henry Kohn sold 20 acres of the Christian Kuntz farm south of the village for Christian Dauffenbach for $2100.  John Bigley sold Lot 2, Block 13 in the village to David Platt for $250.  H.A. Berschneider sold the north 1/2 of the Wille Block to Theodore Wille for $2200.  John Kohn sold Lot 3, Block 2, Tobin's Addition to Ferdinand Steinborn for $125.  Emil Maaske sold the North 1/2 of Lot 17, Block 13 to William Rauschenberger for $720.  O.A. Sell has purchased the William Etscheid property (Lot 7, Block 5) for $500.

26 Mar 1896:  A second story is being added to the Herman Kohls saloon building.  A new well (32 feet deep) has been put in on the lot line of the C.W. Steinacker and C. Reinhard lots on the east side of South Main Street.

2 Apr 1896:  J.J. Solon is preparing to put up a new building to be used as an office and machinery warehouse.  Is to be 44x44 feet and 2 stories tall.

9 Apr 1896:  S. Woodward is having the interior of his office and residence remodeled.

21 May 1896:  L.P. Rounds has purchased Lot 3, Block 1, Tobin's Addition and is about to put up a new residence.

11 June 1896:  J.J. Solon is putting up a new machine shed and warehouse on North Main Street.  Is 22x50 feet and Roth & Kuntz are doing the work.  A new addition is being built on the Commercial Hotel.

18 June 1896:  Peter Reinhard is painting his business.

25 June 1896:  The Commercial Hotel new addition is to be 22x10 feet and 2 stories tall.

2 July 1896:  The frame of the new addition to the hotel is up and enclosed.

16 July 1896:  The barn on the John Devney farm 1 mile north of town was lost to lightning.  Also lost were 8 milk cows, 2 horses, hay, harnesses, a new carriage and tools worth over $1200.  The items were only partially insured.

6 Aug 1896:  Carpenters are at work on O.A. Sell's new residence.

27 Aug 1896:  Roth & Kuntz are to complete the work on the addition to the Commercial Hotel.  The addition adds 6 bedrooms, a large and handsome dining room, a commodious kitchen and storerooms and closets.  Acker & Jacobs are nearing completion of O.A. Sell's new residence on North Main Street.

8 Oct 1896:  The following businesses were painted:  H.A. Berschneider, Wille Bros. and E.B. Fischer.  Work is progressing on John Devney's new residence on his farm 1 mile north of the village.

29 Oct 1896:  The John Kohn residence is painted.  Bickel Bros.' meat market building has been purchased by Ed. Flavin and is being moved onto a lot on Garfield where it will be remodeled into a home.  A new meat market is to be built.

19 Nov 1896:  O.A. Sell's new residence is ready for occupancy.  Carpenters are at work on the new Bickel Bros.' meat market.
