BUILDING HISTORY--1897

11 Mar 1897:  Bickel Bros. are now into their new meat market building.

18 Mar 1897:  Chas. Baker of the Town of Portland is to build a new residence.  Ph. Woodard of Waterloo will be the builder.

NOTE:  His farm was located in the Southwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 14 in the Town of Portland.

25 Mar 1897:  At 2:00 on Sunday afternoon fire destroyed the rear part of the south 1/2 of the Christ. Steinacker building at the corner of North Main and Jackson streets.

1 Apr 1897:  L. Jacobs is putting up an addition to his house--a wing on the west side.  Carpenters are putting finishing touches on O.A. Sell's new residence.  J.F. Hughes expects to begin work on his new residence shortly.

22 Apr 1897:  A new awning is on the Klentz & Liebing store.

29 Apr 1897:  Hedges of evergreens have been planted in the dooryards of C.W. Steinacker, George Roth, and Otto Dauffenbach.

6 May 1897:  The framework is up for J.F. Hughes' new residence.

13 May 1897:  Frank Fischer's new residence is completed and he is expected to move in shortly.

20 May 1897:  Julius Venie is making preparations for a new residence.

27 May 1897:  Frank Tennien has materials on the ground for a new residence.

3 June 1897:  Carpenters are at work raising the roof and putting a second story onto the Otto Dauffenbach residence.

1 July 1897:  Carpenters began work on the Venie residence, having finished the Hughes house.

8 July 1897:  C.W. Steinacker has put up a new windmill for Fred Bickel in the Town of Portland.

15 July 1897:  Henry Reinhard is to begin preparation for the foundation for a new residence.  The framework of J.J. Venie's new building is up and enclosed.

22 July 1897:  Frank Hughes and family are now in their new residence at the corner of Van Buren and Garfield.

5 Aug 1897:  The framework of H.W. Reinhard's new residence is now up.

19 Aug 1897:  E.A. Abendroth is raising and making improvements to his residence.

26 Aug 1897:  The framework of F. Tennien's new residence is up.  Similar in appearance to J.F. Hughes' new house.  A new porch is added to F.H. Dauffenbach's building.

16 Sept 1897:  F.J. Venie has purchased the Woodard building on South Main Street and expects to work it over as part of a new building which he anticipates putting up in the future.

23 Sept 1897:  Masons are at work plastering H.W. Reinhard's new residence.

7 Oct 1897:  Carpenters are repairing and remodeling the P.J. Conery building.

1 Oct 1897:  Charles Breyer is remodeling the Conery building by adding a second story.  John Kohn has moved part of his old saloon building from his residence lot to his farm by using a traction engine.

21 Oct 1897:  F.H. Dauffenbach is increasing the capacity of his story by adding a second story to the rear part of the building.

4 Nov 1897:  J.J. Venie and family have moved into their new residence.  Klentz & Liebing have added a storeroom to their store.

25 Nov 1897:  Charles Ruedig is painting Frank Tennien's new residence.

2 Dec 1897:  Wells drillers are at F. Tennien's residence.
