BUILDING HISTORY--1898

17 Feb 1898:  Carpenters are at work on the framework of a new building to be erected by O.E. Siedschlag on a lot purchased of J.W. Etscheid just to the south of A.F. Duckerschein's place on South Main Street.

24 Feb 1898:  O.E. Siedschlag's new building is up and enclosed.  It is 18x32 feet, 2 stories tall.  The lower floor will be used as a shop, the upper floor will be used as a living area.

10 Mar 1898:  O.E. Siedschlag's new building is nearing completion.

24 Mar 1898:  The roof on J.J. Solon's machine shed is being raised and a second story added.

31 Mar 1898:  Fischer & Stock have been excavating ground in preparation to putting in a basement for a new place of business.

7 Apr 1898:  Fischer & Stock to put up a new blacksmith shop and wagon shop on South Main Street.  To be 22x66 feet, 2 stories with a basement.

12 May 1898:  A.H. Budewitz has purchased the E. Ortman property on North Main Street for $1700, consisting dwelling house, saloon, etc.  He will commence remodeling, especially adding a second story to the saloon.

19 May 1898:  Christian Kohn sr. has completed the foundation for his new residence just south of the railroad and carpenters are at work on the frame.

30 June 1898:  Carpenters and painters have been at work the past few days remodeling and renovating the recently purchased A.H. Budewitz place at the corner of North Main and Jackson.

4 Aug 1898:  Carpenters are putting new shelving and counters in the Bickel building to prepare it for general merchandise.

8 Sept 1898:  Carpenters are remodeling C.W. Weber's residence.  William Rauschenberger has improved the appearance of his residence by the adding of a wing gable.

22 Sept 1898:  The Woodard building has been move to the north side of the bank and will be used by the bank.  The building was previously used by the bank and will now be rented for a saloon.

24 Nov 1898:  J.J. Venie is drilling a well behind his residence.  August Schultz, who recently moved into town from a farm in Grove Prairie, has been erecting a barn on the back part of his lot.
