ELBA MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY
(Yearly Claims)

Each year as the insurance company needed funds to pay out claims, it would send out postcards to its policy-holders informing them of the losses to date and indicating what assessment they would need to pay.  These postcards would detail the losses incurred.  From this information one can get some sense of the individuals who subscribed to the insurance company.  The size of the losses also points to possible types of claims--those of $800 or more usually involving the loss of a house or barn.  Smaller claims were usually for loss of livestock or crops.
