GEORGE LEONARD NEUBERGER

Death this week claims another old and respected citizen in the person of George Leonard Neuberger who passed away Tuesday afternoon Jan. 5th, 1904.  The deceased was born in the village Aberansbach, Bavaria, Germany on the 14th day of June 1818.  For Twenty nine years he resided in his native land and, in 1847, came to America, living a short time in Buffalo and Milwaukee.

He came to the town of Lowell in 1848 and shortly afterwards married Miss Margaret Kohn.  They settled on a farm that has been his home ever since.  There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Neuberger six children five surviving him.  Mrs. Neuberger died a few years ago.  The surviving children are Mrs. Adolph Roth and John Nueberger of the town of Lowell and Leonard Benninger, Mrs. Wm. Winter and Leonard Nueberger of the town of Portland.  He is also survived by twenty-six grand children and ten great grand children.  The funeral of Mr. Nueberger takes Friday from the Lutheran Church and Rev. P.A. Schmidt will officiate.

In commenting on the life of Grandpa Nueberger we can truthfully say that he was one of those hard working honest Germans who braved the vicisitudes of a pioneer life amid difficulties and hardships of which the present generation knows nothing.  Fifty-five years is a long time to reside in one home and the changes that took place since he first began to live on the farm have been many and far reaching.  From the little log cabin his home became a fine large residence.  Comfortable barns instead of sheds, forest cleared away and farm broken up and redeemed for tillage.  In this great work Mr. Nueberger did his full share and now after a life of toil rich in years and rich in the respect of all his neighbors he lays down the distaff of life to bow before a more spiritual world.
