GOEBEL SCHOOL Formed in 1857, this school district was known formally as "Joint District No. 4 of the Towns of Portland and Elba". The district covered the northeastern corner of the Town of Portland and the extreme southeast corner of the Town of Elba. The schoolhouse was located in the southeast corner of the intersection of County Trunk Highways "I" and "BB" in Section 1 of the Town of Portland. Abandoned after the dissolution of the district, the schoolhouse was torn down in the late 1990s. A clipping from the abstract of title to the school lands is pasted in one of the original clerk's record books. This clipping from the Dodge County Title and Abstract Company is dated February 10, 1931. It indicates the following: Warranty Deed from Sam T. Fisher and wife, Betsey, to School District No. 4, Portland, dated October 8, 1857 and recorded August 30, 1858 in Volume 13, Page 260. Covering lands described as: Commencing at the South West corner of North 1/2 of South West 1/4 of South West 1/4 of Section 1, in Township 9 North, of Range 13 East, thence running East along a line a distance of 10 rods to a point, thence North 8 rods to a point, thence West 10 rods to section line, thence South 8 rods to beginning, containing 1/2 acre. On May 7, 1952 the district was dissolved and merged into the newly formed Common School District Joint No. 1 (the current Waterloo school district). |
