JOHN W. GOEBEL

It is with deep regret that we chronicle the death of Mr. John W. Goebel, highly respected citizen of the town of Portland.  While his condition was known to be serious, relatives and friends alike hoped for a recovery to prolong his useful life but medical aid, care and attention proved to no avail, and he passed to his reward at an early hour Tuesday morning, following a severe attack of neuritis.

John Goebel was born at Ringsdorf, Coblenz, Germany, on October 30, 1849.  Together with his parents brothers and sisters he migrated to this country.  His parents settled on a farm about five miles southwest of here where the deceased grew to manhood.  On December 15, 1872 he was joined in marriage with Miss Anna Katharine Young.  They resided for some time with the former's parents, later purchasing the farm on which his son Phillip is now living.  About ten years ago Mr. and Mrs. Goebel retired from active farming and for several years made their home in Waterloo, but with advanced age coming upon them they returned to the homestead to reside with his son and family.

Mr. Goebel was a man of genial and happy disposition, and his nature was of the quality that makes and keeps friends.  He was a hard working and unassuming man, whose business relations with his fellowmen were always marked by the stricktest integrety.  In his family circle he was happiest, and there never was a more devoted or loving husband and father.

Surviving him are his bereaved wife and children as follow:  Mrs. Louis Soldner living in the town of Elba; Mrs. Edward Baker at Waterloo, Wis., Mrs. George Strobel, town of Portland; Phillip, resding on the homestead, fifteen grandchildren.  One brother, Phillip, and one sister, Mrs. John Kohn, both of this village, also survive.

The death of Mr. Goebel removes from the town of Portland one of its best citizens, and from the neighborhood a respected and esteemed friend.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon from the family home and at the Second Reformed Church.  Rev. DeBuhr will officiate.
