LAKESIDE SCHOOL
DISTRICT This school district was organized in 1849 when a group of twenty men met in the home of Jedidiah Clark for the purpose of organizing a school district and selecting a site for the school. Among the twenty men were: Dennis Kelly, Lawrence Yauman, William C. Penticost, Lamont Bartholomew, Emery S. Wilcox, John M. Jerred, John Kohn, Jedidiah Clark, Leonard Neuberger, Orsaurus Jay, Dennis O'Leary, Thomas Yauman, Martin R. Davis, Ebenezer Fischer, Constant Rice, Lawson H. Rice and Julius Wilcox. Other actions taken at the organizational meeting in 1849:
In 1850 the school term was lengthened to 4 months and the teacher was paid $20 for this school term. The first male teacher, A. Marvin, was paid $15 per month whereas the female teachers were paid $5 per month. The teacher usually lived and boarded with his/her pupils. The teacher contracts varied in length but generally the female teachers were hired for the 4 month summer term whereas a male teacher was engaged for the winter term of three months, which usually began on the first Monday in November. In 1867 the school district purchased land from John Waters and erected a new school building. This building remained in use until the district merged into the Reeseville school district. A woodshed and hall were added to the structure over the years. In 1902 the district drilled a well to provide the pupils with fresh water. This school building was eventually razed in the late 1990s. The school board members at the district's 50th anniversary in 1899 were Henry Hamann, clerk; C.A. Buss, treasurer; and J.W. Griffin, director. The school board members at the district's 100th anniversary in 1949 were Arnold Kohn, director; Hilbert R. Kohn, clerk; and Reinhold R. Klug, treasurer.
