PHILIP RUNKEL The death of Philip Runkel, which occurred at his home in this village on Monday, May 1st, removes another of our oldest and most highly esteemed citizens. For some months past he had been in poor health, the best of medical assistance being of no avail, and his sufferings were only relieved in death, which, although not unlooked for, casts a deep shadow of gloom and is sincerely mourned by a host of friends. Mr. Runkel was born near Coblenz, Prussia, March 24th 1833, making him 60 years, 1 month and 7 days of age, at the time of his death. He emigrated with his parents to America and settled near this place in 1847, was married to Katherine Breyer in 1856, and has been engaged in buying grain at this place for the past 25 years or over. He leaves a family consisting of a wife and three children, Louis, Frank and Emma, who with the many other relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all. The funeral which was very largely attended took place from the German Reformed church Thursday, Rev., Jorris officiating, and the remains were laid at rest in the village cemetery. A number of relatives and friends from abroad were here to attend the funeral. Among them were Judge Colonius, wife and daughter of Portage, Fred Headbreak and wife of Fall River, L. Runkel, and Mrs. Fage, of Gillett, together with many others. |
