What are the
Outreach Radio Spots?
A new idea for using secular radio for
Christian outreach is in the pilot stage, created by Bob Smith, former
GreenvilleConnect Executive Director and current webmaster of
GreenvilleConnect.org.
Purpose
These radio "commercials" have been created to reach unchurched people
through secular radio by interesting them in basic questions of Christianity
and Christian solutions to current problems. They're quite different
from the typical "sermon excerpt" commercials churches often run.
Method
They use one-minute dramatized vignettes to put current problems or
apologetic concepts in everyday language, using current idioms and humor.
The plan is to create more of them, so people get to know the characters and
follow them through their progress to faith, return to the church, etc., and
to create other characters with other questions and concerns.
Sponsorship
Sponsors are required to pay for the air time and the cost of writing and
producing the recordings. Click the link at the left and tell us if
you'd like to consider sponsorship in your city.
Geography
The spots are independent of geography, so Christians in any American or Canadian
city can run them on local stations. They could be also be recorded
with other English accents, or translated into other languages.
Call to Action
After each one, an "announcer" voice will issue a call to action. This
will depend on the broadcast environment and the sponsors. Usually, it
will be an invitation to a website. For example, after "Mom, are we
Christians?," the voice may say, "To investigate this and related questions,
visit GetSomeAnswers.org." That site will have text, audio,
and/or video on the topics of the vignettes, perhaps links to existing
apologetic websites. "Worried about the kids" may
mention "WhatOurKidsAreMissing.org." It will discuss the
indoctrination of children with relativism and post-modernism and present
Christian teaching and fellowship as the antidote.
Follow-up
The websites will have follow-up recommendations, such as how to find or
choose a church, and, if the sponsors in a city are willing, a telephone
number for counseling and guidance. The proper ways to do this are
still open, and recommendations are welcome.
