The Linux operating system is an open-source variation of Unix.  It is believed by many to be a viable alternative to Windows or MacOS because most Linux distros are free, as are the vast majority of software applications which Linux supports.  It is worth noting, however, that Linux is likely to be viewed as the least user-friendly of the three major platforms.  Proponents argue that this is not the case, pointing to strides made in recent years relating to device support and the installation and configuration methodologies.
