Two Sheet Skiff – Construction

We laid-out then cut the side panels, the transome, and the bulkhead on a sheet of home-center varity ¼” lauan. We set aside a second sheet for the bottom. In retrospect, I should have laid out the panels so that I could have used the “good” face for either the interior or the exterior. We then could have stained and varnished the inside or out. As it is (you’ll see below) I’ll need to paint both the inside and out as I have a good side and a bad side mixed.

I then cut the stem per dimensions from the AutoCad 3d drawing file. I used a clear section of 2x4. The angle between the slots for the hulls is 67degs. Amazingly the angle was correct. The stem gives you an easy way to line-up and then glue the side panels. I filled the slots with PL then used an air-powered brad nailer to hold the panels in place while the PL dried.

Note: Posed
photo – I actually nailed the panels in
place with saftey glasses on – not my trusty, but young, assistant.

As the stem dried, we added pine to the transome and bulkhead, then trimmed the bulkhead to a nice shape. We then clamped the bulkhead in place to hold the hull shape then glued the transome in. After the transome glue dried, the bulkhead was glued in place.
