Spruce

Spruce wood has the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood.  This made it very popular for building wood airplanes, think Wright brothers, not Spruce Goose.  Spruce is still a popular choice for wood kayaks, spars for wooden boats and sound boards for instruments.  Spruce is the preferred wood for guitar tops.  Unfortunately because of its long fibbers it is also the preferred wood for making high grade paper used for magazines.  The largest stand of old growth spruce is in the Tsongas National Forest which is being logged so the trees can be shipped to Japan and processed into paper.  The Wood I have is from an unknown variety of spruce.  It looked like it might have been a live Christmas tree that someone planted in their front yard.  I gave much of my wood to a friend, but I still have two boards that are each 11' long and a little over a foot wide.   The wood is a bit knotty but the knots are sound.  It might make a nice tansu chest or interesting bookmatched panels.
