Out of the Dustbin from Trent Busch

We’ve had a great year with the Rochester Woodcarver’s. It’s hard to believe that we only have one more meeting this season. I hope to see you all at the potluck picnic.

I’d like to welcome Wayne Hendrickson in as the new president and Kathy Ward to the board. Not only are they great carvers, but great people. We are privileged to have their leadership for our club.

Thanks to everyone who helped out this year. We really had a few interesting challenges with the weather and scheduling conflicts.

Have a great summer and don’t forget about helping out at the county fair. We can use carvings, setup and takedown personnel, and people to demonstrate carving through out the week. Its quite fun and well worth your time.

Happy carving.

Trent

Program, March 19, 2005 - Trent Bush – Intarsia

Intarsia – making pictures with different colors of wood
Judy Gail Roberts – started creating pictures in wood in the 70’s

She thought she had a new art, but discovered a very old history

70% of books on Intarsia are Judy’s

Trent’s animal carving is one of Judy’s patterns

Mostly cedar, and other colored woods  (white to walnut color)

Took approximately 2000 hours to create (think, trial and error)

Would take less time if he did it again

Judy recommends woods without straight grains – creates more interesting looks

A few tips:

For cutting the wood, need a crisp line to go by

Can stack wood, but harder to cut on scroll saw

Cutting goes better with band saw

Harder to cut tight curves with band saw

Recommends cutting everything separately

Cut slow

Use magnifying glass

Want to make it appear as though it is one piece of wood

Picture is glued to ¼” plywood (backer board)

Cedar doesn’t carve well, but saws well

Most shaping with sander

¾” stock used for all pieces

Use rubber cement for gluing pattern on (this glue can be peeled off)

Laser print can also be ironed on wood

Some stain, dye (aniline dyes), paint woods (cut first then dye)

Can use rough pieces for backgrounds (Trent used cork)

Trent carves on his pieces

Trent uses the thickest blade and recommends a decent scroll saw ($350-$450)
