Rochester Woodcarvers
March - May 2006 Newsletter
Meetings: 9am - 11am on the 3rd Saturday of each month (Sept - April)
May - the meeting is a picnic - look for details below
Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9th Street and 7th Avenue SE, Rochester, MN
Greetings from the President
We recently wrapped up the club year for the Rochester Woodcarvers and overall it went pretty well with a lot of help from many of our members at club events and I thank you for your participation. The 30th Annual Woodcarvers Show had excellent crowds, close to table capacity with carvers, the weather cooperated very well and the show finished in the black financially so that was a real plus. The 2007 show has been booked for March 24 & 25 at the 4-H building.
The club will be having a booth at the Olmsted County Fair again this summer with the fair dates, Mon, July 31 to Sunday, August 6. The setup for the booth would need to be on Sunday afternoon, July 30 and likely about 3 PM to 5 PM. Lyle Bacon will again have locked show cases that carvings are displayed in so we really need to have a variety of carvings from club members to show off your talents. Carvings can be brought that Sunday afternoon, July 30th setup time or Bev Stupca said they could be brought to their house ahead of fair time if you are unable to make it that day. We need members to demonstrate carving during the fair so if you are able to spend a couple of hours during the day or evening while the fair is going on it would be appreciated. It is a great public relations tool for the carving club as many people stop by the booth to watch and ask questions about wood carving. Some of our present members have joined because they talked to someone while at the fair or the carving show. Friday is usually demonstration day at the fair so several carvers have made an effort in previous years to be there during that day to carve.
There are various carving events going on this summer throughout the Midwest so take in a class or event to pick up some new ideas and skills. Be sure to bring some of your new carvings this Fall for Show & Tell this fall from a class you have attended.
We are always on the hunt for program ideas for club meetings during the year so please let me or a board member know of a program that might be able to be scheduled. If you are connected to the internet, check out the club website from time to time.
Have a good summer and I hope to see many of you at the Olmsted County fair and again for the first club meeting of the 2006-2007 year, Saturday, Sept 16. Keep your tools sharp, carve safely and bring your latest carving projects to the meetings this fall.
