First meeting of this fall season coming up fast! Mark your calendar now! See details below.

From the President:
Hopefully you have not let your carving tools collect dust over the summer and have continued to do some new projects since our May meeting. We look forward to seeing some of these carvings at the Show & Tell at upcoming meetings. Your RWC board has put together programs for the new club year but not all the months are filled in yet. Some of you have passed on ideas for potential programs and we appreciate you doing this to try to make it an interesting year.

There was a very good display of various types of carvings at the Olmsted County Fair booth supplied by members. Several members gave their time in setting up & taking down the display, doing some carving & answering questions for visitors that stopped to look.

Don't forget to continue to carve ornaments for the Festival of Trees project with a theme of Christmas Remembered (An Old Fashioned Christmas), which should give you a wide variety of possible ornaments to carve. The Festival is only a couple of months away now so we would once again like to have a filled, unique tree for this great project.

If you know someone that might have an interest in taking up carving, encourage them to come to one of our meetings. Most new or potential carvers always have questions on how to get started, where to get tools or wood, what to carve for the first project. Our club meeting is a great place to start.

See you on Sept 16.
Wayne Hendrickson, President

Dick's presentation will cover both functional and decorative woodworking dating back to the time of the Vikings. He will show examples of various styles and types, which range from very humble pieces to some highly decorated pieces.

Dick became a "born again Norwegian" in 1983 when making his first visit to the home farm in Norway where family relatives still reside. He became very active in the Folk Art Education Program at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum in Decorah, Iowa. In 2000, Dick received the Vesterheim gold medal in woodworking. Festival of Trees 2006 -- by Dennis Tooley
The Festival of Trees is only two months away. Plans are moving along for the club's tree with the theme of "Christmas Remembered". The theme will be carried out with the tree decorated as an old fashioned tree as many of us might remember from our growing-up years. The base, being constructed by Tom Pike, will resemble a four-sided fireplace with mantels for hanging stockings and an open center with a representational fire. Under the tree we plan to have a few old fashioned toys, e.g. runner sled, airplane, doll, etc. The tree topper will be an angel created by Laurie Reed and Janet Denn. Ornaments for the tree can run the gamut of whatever you might recall from ornaments on your Christmas tree. So let your imagination run wild and be creative in your ornament carving. We would like ornaments from as many members of the club as possible and need to receive them prior to the November meeting so that they can be displayed at that meeting. If you have any questions, contact Dennis Tooley or members of the committee: Laverne Schettl, Laurie Reed, Karen Reily, Tom Pike or Robert Ricks. We look forward to another significant year of contributions of ornaments from club members. Thank you for your assistance and support.

In Memoriam: Our club member Robert Breckle died June 26, 2006. He retired after working for 48 years in radiology and ultrasound at Mayo Clinic. He was a master gardener and enjoyed wood carving. We will miss him, and we send our condolences to his family.
