Rochester Woodcarvers
September 2007 - October 2007 Newsletter Meetings: 9am - 11am on the 3rd Saturday of each month (Sept - May) Redeemer Lutheran Church, 9th Street and 7th Avenue SE, Rochester, MN The long, hot summer is almost gone; the birds are thinking about where to spend the winter (real birds and snowbirds), and woodcarvers are beginning to sharpen tools and mental skills and prepare wood. It must be fall! Time to put the meeting dates on your annual calendar for this carving season. The dates are listed below. Here's what's in store for our September 15 meeting:
A new year of exploring, learning, and sharing in the art of woodcarving is about to begin, as our club resumes its monthly meetings this September 15th. Your RWC board has lined up what we hope will be an informative and interesting series of speakers and topics this fall and winter. The club will be teaching classes, again, this fall, through the Community Education program. The Festival of Trees project is well under way and you can find out more about how you can contribute to it elsewhere in this newsletter. Remember to take a look at our club's website: (http://webpages.charter.net/rochcarve/index.html) to see photos of the Festival Tree base by Gary Berg and preview our first program of the new year. Now is also a good time to look around the house for any RWC library books that need to be returned. Several club members once again loaned their fine carvings for display at the Olmsted County Fair last month. Lyle Bacon had everything organized in our new location, which was in the small room of the 4-H building. This venue seemed to work quite well for our club and several members donated their time to demonstrate carving at our booth. Thanks go out to Delphine Nelson, Laverne Schettl, Chuck and Bev Stupca, Lyle Bacon, Tom Severson and others who demonstrated their carving skills for fair-goers. Lots of interest was generated; and maybe some new carvers will take the classes this fall. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your new president. I'm looking forward to seeing you all again as we gather in September. I welcome your comments and feedback about the club and its activities and encourage your suggestions for program ideas. Randy Kinnick Show-N-Tell: Bring some pieces to show off. It's one of the highlights of our meeting, and the more we have the merrier! Finished, unfinished, sculpture, whittlings, ideas, patterns. Show us what you're doing. It might give us an idea for our next project. 2007 Fall Program Schedule Please mark these dates on your calendars: September - Jock Holmen - Acanthus Carving and Design October - John Krantz - All About Wood November - Ev Ellenwood - Carving Faces with Expression December - Christmas Party and Potluck January - Mike Keller - Making Guitars February - TBA March - TBA April - TBA May - Annual Picnic Community Ed. Laurie says: Good Progress! The barn and base are coming along nicely. Take a peek on our website (the link is found in Randy's Mallet and Gouge for this month). It has the barn's dimensions and a couple of photos so you can get your creative juices flowing. Please let Laurie know if you plan to carve something for the base, so she'll know how to plan and arrange the base itself. You can call her at 507-273-3892. Please carve some ornaments for this tree this year! Some Festival of Trees dates to mark on your calendar: Oct. 19th -- Laurie's Festival Tree Committee will be meeting to assemble the base. They'd love it if you have your contribution done by then, so they know what they have to work with. If not, OK, keep carving! But let Laurie know. Oct. 20th -- Meeting Date. Mark it on your calendars! Bring any finished ornaments to the meeting. Nov. 17th -- Ornaments due. The November 17th meeting will be devoted to assembling and viewing all the ornaments. Please have at least one - more, if at all possible! Let's fill the tree again! If you have your ornaments carved and finished by the September meeting, you can bring them and someone will be there to collect them and get the ball rolling. Please have them all done by the November meeting. If you can get them to Laurie in advance of that meeting, it will give the committee time to display them for the meeting. They will be a major part of the Show-N-Tell feature for this meeting. Library Paste Do you have some overdue books - like I do? Gather them up and bring them back - to exchange for some new reading materials. Take some extra time to look into those dark recesses where old books hide and gather dust. Drag them out from under the couch, behind the fridge, under the bed……… and out in the storage shed from last winter. We'll trade you! John Gordon, Editor 507-289-3805 |
