Mr. Fontaine was always interested in the
martial arts, growing up watching "Kung Fu" and Chuck Norris movies.
His first Martial Arts Instructor was a man named Bernie Ringette,
who was very well know as the maker of the Phoenix, Spider Brand
line of Heavy bags. This was back in the Mid 70's. However, not
having the resources to continue, he soon had to drop out. Upon
obtaining his driving license and means of income to support the
Martial Arts, he began training again at a local Fred Villari's
Studio of Self Defense around 1983. The school was not exactly what
he was looking for and often was taught by lower ranking students.
Shortly thereafter he dropped out again.
Mr. Fontaine again began training at New
England Tae Kwon Do in 1985 at the Bakers Corner location in
Seekonk, MA. This school was run under First Degree Black Belt Peter
Morell. This was the beginning of his introduction to Grand Master
Hee Il Cho's style of Tae Kwon Do. The school was a branch location
of the Briarwood Plaza, Seekonk MA. Location run under Lenny Mills
Jr. who was a student of Tommy Bakalakis, one of Grand Master Cho's
original Students. This school eventually closed and Peter Morell
took ownership of the Briarwood Plaza location, where Mr. Fontaine
continued his training for years to come. Mr. Fontaine obtained the
Rank of 2 Brown Dec. at this location.
Eventually Mr. Fontaine would go off to
school, change jobs, and had to discontinue his training. The
Briarwood Plaza location eventually closed. Mr. Fontaine never
stopped training in Tae Kwon Do, always practicing Hyungs, bag work,
etc. Over the years Mr. Fontaine trained with various instructors in
Tae Kwon Do, most, if not all, originally tied to Grand Master Cho,
but never stayed with any one instructor for any long period of
time.
It took his Daughter Kayla’s interest in
the Art to spark a return for Mr. Fontaine himself. Finally finding
a home at the New England Tae Kwon Do Center in Coventry RI. The New
England Tae Kwon Do Center in Coventry RI has the largest staff of
quality black belts in the New England Area. Although owned today by
William Leahy, the original owner, Ray Lannon, a first Generation
Grand Master Cho student, still plays an active role and is the
senior ranking Black Belt.
Mr. Fontaine obtained his black belt in
2003 and his second degree in 2005. Mr. Fontaine still trains
actively today at the Coventry RI location as well as teaches at the
Brooklyn CT location.
In Late 2004, after attending a Full
Contact Kickboxing match, Mr. Fontaine decided to pit his lifelong
Tae Kwon Do skills to the test. In January of 2005 he began training
at Sampalis Kickboxing in West Warwick RI and competed in a USKBA
Amateur Kickboxing event Called SuperBouts at the Rhode Island
Indoor Sports Center in April of 2005, winning his first Full
Contact fight unanimously at the ripe old age of 37.
Recently Mr. Fontaine moved his family to
Brooklyn, CT. Traveling back and forth to RI for his children to
train in Tae Kwon Do was not effective thus creating the need for
the new location.
