Anigua

Perfect place for a honeymoon or second honeymoon or third honeymoon depending on one's status!

This island in the West Indies is a paradise! Sometime ago it gained its independence from Great Britain. Its population is about 98% black. All speak that funny "English" language! There is no fresh water on the island. A huge desalinization plant furnishes all the fresh water. Cattle are free to roam the island at will. The one large town - St. Johns - caters to the many cruise ships plying the Caribbean. More info ck: Antigua

Space A is fairly easy. There are C141 flights that depart Charleston AFB on a scheduled basis. They fly to Patrick AFB, Florida, and then on to Ascension Island with a stop at Antigua. Retirees are not allowed on Ascension.

The Air Force maintains satellite-tracking facilities on Antigua with mainly a civilian work force. Quarters are not available. The Navy also has a site and has limited Space A facilities. These 2 facilities are on the northeast side of the island; St. Johns is on the opposite side. Car rentals can be had at the local airport. Driving is on the "wrong side" of the road. A taxi to St. Johns will cost about $20.00 round trip.

Hotels abound in St. Johns. The cost? From around $200.00 to $600.00 per day (near St Johns)! Just my style, right? Again, thumbs down. Near the Air Force/Navy base is a small hotel (The Lord Nelson) run by an English family that visited Antigua and decided to stay. A room there with 2 double beds, and shower is $60.00 per day with a "look-alike" English pub tossed in to boot - my style. (This price may vary depending on the season). The room was separated from the ocean with a 4' cement block wall and about 20 feet from the ocean. Because this inlet is protected, there is only about a 3' difference between high and low tide - Neat! Fact is, the Base Commander of the Navy Base discovered the Lord Nelson soon after his arrival and has an almost reserved seat at the bar each night- and a friendly group every night raise elbows there! I ate a hearty breakfast and too large a dinner almost daily at the Navy Mess - walking distance from the motel. The cost was the daily rate plus a surcharge because of my retired status but still an outstanding deal!

A service at the motel is to teach wind surfing and scuba diving - thought hard about it but in the end decided: "Well, maybe not!"
