Moulin Rouge - Take in a Show and Enjoy

For quarters stay out of the Champes/Etoile area unless you are the big spender!

An inexpensive area is around Pont St. Cloud where hotel rooms with a bidet and washbasin in the room and a shower "down the hall" can be had for around $25.00 to $30.00 per day. If you want to go bohemian you can stay in the Pigalle area - inexpensive and an experience that will really give you something to write home about! Don't misunderstand, this is a haunt for artists, painters and others with alternative lifestyles - not only a place where you go to cher-chez la femme but also who knows, you may become a friend of the next Renoir, Matisse or Chevalier.

The French probably have the best subway system in Europe and there are stations all around the city. For a map of the system check: Paris In fact before visiting this "city of light" pull up all kinds of info from the same WEB page.

There is a USO still located in Paris - 20 Rue de Tremille - where you can usually get tickets for the Follies either gratis or at a greatly reduced price as well as other entertainment ventures (The last time I visited Parie, follies tickets were running $100.00 each - as I remember and Moulin Rouge tickets somewhat less. I was able to visit both with tickets from the USO for nothing

The Paris "flea market" is a must to see and get some of that onion soup at the Farmer's market early morning! Great! Also there are many cruise boats on the Seine that cater to tourists. A great way to see the West & East banks of the Seine as well as other parts of the city. The guides on the boats usually speak two languages in describing the surrounds - French and English so you should have no problem in understanding, N'est-ce pas?

TIP: If possible, visit Paris in August. That is the traditional month that Parisians leave their great city for a vacation - at one time the Adriatic was a popular spot for them. The city is not deserted, but its a far cry from other times!. Another tip: Parisians have the luxury of purchasing automobile insurance for weekend and holiday driving only. Try staying off the highways if possible during these periods.

Another driving tip: The person on your right has the "right of way". Oh boy, with 6 lanes of traffic circling the Etoile, you are in the inter-lane at 5 PM - so have plenty of gasoline - you may not get out til after 7 PM or maybe like the poor fellow on the subway in Boston - you may never get off!

The Navy has a saying: Its not a job, its an adventure! Same for Parisian cuisine. Get your snails fixed just about anyway you like (and after a rain storm, if you see Frenchmen beating bushes with sticks, don't think they have lost their marbles. No, they are only searching out that lowly snail)! Chocolate-covered worms - a delicacy. And the cheeses? If in doubt ask the waiter. Some of that stuff is down right raunchy! Also check out one of the many outdoor markets. The x-wife did and this what she saw:

Now, while listening to: Cabaret" just picture Marlene Dietrich on-stage. Oh oh oh.
