Prague
Old Czechoslovakian Fla g
This beautiful city was bombed once during WWII - and then not by design. A B25
was on a mission to some place in Germany and lost
an engine (mechanical failure) over Prague. So the pilot dropped his bombs in the night
(Prague was blacked out) to lighten his load. I was told that he did hit a bridge on the
Vltava River but didn't shut it down. Hotels can cost up to $200.00 per night. Just my
style, right? Of course not! There is an organization there called "A.V.E."
where one can get quarters for as little as $10.00 per night. I lucked out. Had an
apartment with a kitchen for $17.00 per day. Planned to stay 3 days, wound up staying 14!
There are signs pointing to this AVE in the train station. Travel in the city by Tram and
subway. Cost about five cents per ride - and that's on the honor system and includes
transfers. But at five cents per ride go for it! There are many tours available that cover
most of the city and well worth the $15.00 or so for it. When I went Space A travel was
available to Munich. I took a train round trip to Prague for $100.00. Now you must take
that train from the Frankfurt area. But this city is an architectural wonder with many
styles side by side and enjoyable. The people are most friendly! In every case, when in a
store wanting to purchase something, I would ask: "Do you speak English?" and
invariably I got back: "A little." And they would bend over backwards to help.
Prague has beautiful lace (as pretty as Belgium I think), and computer software - uh -
better not talk about that! Didn't see a single fat Czech! I have a walking pace of about
4 MPH and I was being passed by every Czech on the street! No wonder there are no fat
ones! I have an extensive write up on Prague that I prepared while there and will share
with anyone interested.
As we all know, this republic has been peacefully divided. I haven't been to Prague since this happened.
