Puerto
Rico
Roosevelt Roads
Flying alone, I can fly in CONUS as well as overseas. Went to Charleston and there was a flight to Jacksonville Naval Air
Station, Jacksonville, Florida. Called the Air Passenger Terminal at JAX and asked about a flight to Puerto Rico. They had a C9 going to Roosevelt Roads that I could make and Space A "looked good" (about the only information you can get from Passenger Terminal people). Took a chance and went to JAX. Caught the flight OK. BOQ's were available at Roosey Roads (Navy)so I actually spent 5 days on base. Rented a car just outside the gate (Hertz) and did some sight seeing. I did not go into San Juan except to the civilian air terminal since I had been advised against it if I were traveling alone. Next time I won't heed this advise. Like New York City - be cool and you'll be OK. Purchased my Puerto Rican Rum (Bacardi) and returned to the States easily direct to Charleston AFB. Flying to Puerto Rico is readily available thru Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Call the Passenger Air Terminal for additional information.About 7 miles from Roosey Roads is a Rain Forest.
At the time I
visited PR the island was under a severe draught and everything was dry. Amazingly, when I
visited the Rain Forest all was like a tropical paradise! Great place for Gene
Kelly! The cloud cover reminded me of
that Peanuts character that always has a cloud over his head - Rain Forest covered with
clouds, rest of Puerto skies completely clear! A must to see.
