Rota

About 25 miles from the Rock of Gibraltar on the Atlantic coast is Rota. There is a Naval Station there and quarters are usually available on base. Norfolk Naval Air Station has flights to Rota. One can also go out of Dover AFB, Del to Ramstein and catch a flight from there to Rota or occasionally direct from Dover. Car rentals can be made on base for around $25.00 per day unlimited mileage; however, be aware that gas costs around $5.00 per gallon. AND don't forget to get that special piece of Lladro!

Don't Look Down!

Returning from Rota was an adventure for me in itself. A scheduled C5 to Dover was scratched and the next scheduled flight was not to leave for 3 days. Took a walk around this huge base and as a thought, checked the Passenger Terminal for maybe a non-scheduled flight. None to the States but a C21 (neat 2 engine Beechcraft, I believe) was leaving in 1 hour for Mildenhall and I could get on it. Did. Went to Mildenhall, spent the night and left the next morning for McGuire AFB, New Jersey. My car was at Norfolk Naval Station, Virginia so that was to be my final destination.Nothing for the entire week going to Norfolk but there was a C5 going to Dover (20 minutes flight). Called Dover. They did not have anything going to Norfolk all week as well, but they did have a flight going to Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida,  that I could make. Called Jax and there was a C9 going to Norfolk and if all went OK ..Well, long story short (somewhat). Made all the connections. Boy, did my car look good to me when I got to Norfolk. So as I have said, use that DSN! The more you do the more proficient you become in being your own travel agent.
