of the facilities in Soto Cato with awesome Honduran
mountains in background.
This remote small Air Force base is located in Honduras near the town of Comayaqua. The capitol, Tegucigalpa, is located about 40 "klicks" south. It is quite primitive (cinder block hooches, centrally located latrine facilities). There is a base exchange (no entry to Retirees); an excellent consolidated mess facility where retirees are welcome (daily rate, plus nominal surcharge (well worth it) with excellent food; a pizza place; a "Franks" place; a small souvenir facility; ATM machine; library; small education facility; theater and other rudimentary facilities that service personnel have come to expect.
Also, a great M.W.R. facility (Morale, Welfare, Recreation). The director, Robin Gonzalez, does an outstanding job. With 4 other retirees she arranged for us an overnight trip to Copan (Mayan ruins), another trip to Lake Yojoa where black bass fishing is excellent, and later I traveled with seven service personnel going on weekend pass to San Padro Sula, where I then caught a civilian bus on to my final destination of Tela on the Caribbean. The true adventure then begins!
