MY TRAVELS SINCE RETIRING - A GUIDE FOR YOU
Retirees can stay on military bases on a Space A basis, and the prices run around $9.00 to $25.00. A retiree can now sign up and be guaranteed up to 3 days on-base. With the dollar now buying around 1.3 deutchmarks, and with German inflation what it is, Germany is no longer the bargain it once was. Other countries and cities (except Switzerland) are more of a bargain today. Over the past 24 years I have visited Europe, Africa, Central America, Caribbean 45 times. I have always flown standby there and back, so it can be done.
UPDATE 16 Jul 1998!
If your are flying Civilian Lease Aircraft to Europe, be aware that these flights now depart and arrive at Baltimore/Washington International. They do have limo service (commercial) from BWI to Andrews, McGuire, and Dover AFB's; however, because of the distances to Dover (about 85 miles)or McGuire (about 150 miles), for the military retiree it may be best to go into Andrews (about 25 miles)for onward transportation. Also remember that Dependents of retirees cannot fly standby stateside. I have not had the opportunity to come into BWI, but if I had my "druthers", I would must prefer a Cargo Flight into Dover than a Commercial Lease into BWI. If any of you have had any experience in utilizing BWI, please e-mail me & I'll update! They also have a WEB page that furnishes you some information on this site. Philadelphia no longer has civilian lease aircraft for the Military. This site being maintained by McGuire Personnel. Their URL is: http://amcbwi.mcguire.af.mil/.This site can also be accessed through Ramstein AFB:
http://132.25.192.53/group/.UPDATE 29 Apr 1999. There are no longer Commercial Lease Flights available for retirees as well as active duty to Panama!! The Howard AFB Flight Line closes 1 May 99. Military flights in and out of Panama will go through the Civilian Air Terminal. Flights still go into Soto Cano and retirees are again allowed on this base; however, their are some restrictions on going on and off base as prescribed by the Honduran Government.
