Turkey
Adana
A city on the southeastern part of Turkey. This part of Turkey doesn't
show on most European maps. You get there on Space A to Incirlik AFB through Ramstein.
Flights do originate from Dover to Incirlik through Ramstein or Rota. What's there? The
best pistachios in the world, 100% wool Turkish Orientals at unbelievable prices (and uh,
"Persia" is very close so if you are a mind to...), inexpensive brass ornaments
of every size and fancy, gold, gold, gold at excellent prices and Turks that just may not
appreciate you, so take care! The Muslin religion is taken very seriously so be careful
what you say. This is a very inexpensive country to visit. To me it was most exciting!
Quarters are available on base, but Incirlik is about 14 miles from Adana, so I suggest
getting a hotel or B&B in Adana. How do you get from Incirlik to Adana? Taxi? $15.00
to $20.00 - thumbs down! Catch the local bus right out the gate for $.50! Rate of exchange
when I was there 50,000 of theirs for $1.00! Kinda blows you mind to see something costing
100,000 whatever but equals only $2.00. Turks take dollars, deutchmarks, and probably any
other European currency. There is a weekly "Freedom flight" (Boeing 757) that
originates in Incirlik, stops at Aviano and then on to Philadelphia. From Philly a limo to
Dover is $30.00.
Once you arrive at Incirlik you must go through Turkish custom police (and before going
there, you have to get proper documents from the AP's). The cost to the Turks is around
$20.00 - "entrance fee". You can only get your proper papers to enter and exit
Incirlik from the Turks at 1600 hours. So if you arrive early morning or after 1600 hours
plan on staying on base until this customs office of such opens.
