Linux

Wow big topic! Linux is basically an operating system (much like Windwoes without the woes). If you were to just get linux without anything else, just the core, you would have basically MS DOS. Now as this isn't too interesting you would most likely want to install what they call a Desktop Environment (fancy words for cool pretty desktop). With a Desktop environment you can run programs and even do some cool 3d stuff like games and even game development! Linux is often used to do some really tedious stuff such as Render (draw) 1.5 million frames over the next 20 days for a movie. You can obtain this ultimate power and use it for yourself, however you don't just have to make movies with it. I have found that Linux runs most things faster than Windwoes and it usually stays on longer without crashing (yes even better than new and improved Windwoes XP). It does have its downsides though like most game companies don't create a linux version because they feel not enough people are running it and would play their game. This is changing though as many well known games have been redone to work on linux. There are also many games that run on linux only (although these are less common) and some are extremely fun (and addictive). If you would like to run a Linux operating system I have a list of steps to get linux running on your computer. Go to The Fedora Project page and read the information there as they list how to download and install the Operating System. They also have some FAQ questions that may solve some issues you would be concerned with. Then go to mplayer homepage and download and install that. This will allow you to play any movie you want (pretty much) with the greatest of ease. This will also let you play VCD's and DVD's. With that done you should have a nice Linux Operating system installed on your computer and the two best things about it are. First, it doesn't cost anything. Second, you don't have to get rid of Windwoes in case you decide to switch back (not likely)!
