What Does the Goshen Preservation Alliance Do?

The Goshen Preservation Alliance (GPA) is an advocacy and action organization.

It has advocated the preservation and maintenance of the N. 0. Nelson (Wagner) complex in Leclaire, taken a stand on master planning programs, and acted as a watchdog on county, city, and village projects that would affect historic structures and sites. It continues to do so.

Perhaps its most significant project to date has been the purchase and moving of the Nickel Plate Railroad Station to a temporary site, then physically restoring the exterior of it in an environmentally safe manner while seeking a permanent location.

Annually, it seeks out excellent examples of preservation and restoration efforts by individuals, businesses, and government units and presents awards recognizing those efforts -- everything from the restoration of a log cabin to the development of nature areas, from preservation projects on houses, barns, churches, and schools, to restoration work on commercial buildings, parks, and unique sites.

GPA also interacts with other private and governmental groups with similar goals, such as the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission, the Friends of Leclaire, the Madison County Historical Museum and others, in educational and preservation programs.
