Embroidered laces ~

Carrickmacross and Carrickmafrost
These laces are application of organdie (or similar fabric) on netting.  The design is couched with an outline cording and then parts of the organdie are cut away to reveal the netting.
Origins of this lace are Irish and are based upon Carrickmacross techniques.
I call the pieces which are softly tinted and have shimmering sheer fabrics (instead  of matte organdie) ~ "Carrickmafrost".

"Stars" were the theme for the International Old Lacers Convention in the summer of 2000 which was held in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Since no "cosmic star" theme flowed out of my little penny pencil; I chose a "star flower" theme.
This was designed as a prototype to sample flowers and some new techniques which I wished to utilize on the wedding gown ~ "When Angels Kissed The Stars".

100% cotton netting, CASA and other special occasion sheer fabrics, also Kreinik metallics, DMC embroidery floss, Mill Hill seed beads and petit point beads, wire, gray, peach and white freshwater pearls, semi-precious stones including:  mother-of-pearl, moonstone and rose quartz

Flowers used in this design are:

Some of the inspiration for the gown and headpiece came from a painting by Sophie Anderson (1823 - 1903).   Numerous butterflies were stitched and placed around the gown and headpiece.  Encased in organdie is a real tiger swallowtail butterfly.  The flowers are purchased silk roses.

"Lady Grace" is a reproduction of an original 1880's mannequin made by the famous French doll maker Bru.  Each doll is hand made and hand painted in the same manner as the original.  This 5' fully jointed porcelain doll was produced and loaned for exhibit by Mike and Donna Crosby.

The lace and design for "When Angels Kissed the Stars" was created by Leslie Saari.  Seamstress' Deb Hines and Barb Paddock collaborated in the gown construction.

Headpiece and Wedding Gown are currently in the LKS Collection.

When Angels Kissed The Stars

When angels kissed the stars
They made this gown come true...

A legend, I shall unfold to you
As it was told to me;
I know the tale, as you will too
For every word is true, is true...

First you should know
What holds the stars in place
Suspended there in heaven's
black and velvet space

It is a frost that holds them
Up there in the sky
Not a stronger paste
Can you even buy!

But the legend continues on
A miracle happens on a special dawn

You see only once in a thousand years
Are angels allowed to cry
Fro they have very special tears
Which even angels mustn't dry

So kissed now with the angel's tears
The miracle does now appear
The frosty paste has turned to lace
Allowing the stars to drift down from space.

Once stars of the Cosmos
They are now stars of the Earth
With the dawns' early light
Shadows take flight.

They begin this day anew
All softly tinted, frosted flowers
Sparkling in the morning dew.
And like all very special lace...

There are secrets all tucked in place.
If you know how to read what you easily see
And see what you can't comprehend...
Then you can understand this lace my friend!

There are flowers which have starry names
And stones that are cosmic too.
There are butterflies; but are they real?
One "pop" if you look; daughters three
Who are very special to me;

Legends, secrets
and a new kind of lace
Just once in a millennium
When angels kissed the stars in space...
