Originally spelled S-e-i-d-a-t, we believe the Saidat family hails from Arnsdorf, Germany. Grandpa told a story of how his father, August, used to duck across the border to Czechoslovakia as a child, and tease the border guards. A look at a map of the time suggests that our Arnsdorf is located near Dresden.
August was one of 14 children. We hear the term "11 brothers" but don't know if he was one of the 11, or if he had 11. At the turn of the century young men in Europe were routinely conscripted to the army to fight in the Prussian war. Not wanting this fate for his sons, August's father sent three of his sons away-August, Rudolph and John. We think their father's name was Christian, but cannot be certain. We also have reason to believe that two other brothers were named Gottfried and Edward, and sisters may have been named Bertha or Mathilda.
Any information on the Seidat family is always welcome.
