Family History - Otto

Born on September 23, 1918, Otto was the first-born of August Saidat and Bertha Neumann. After his mother died, when he was about 16, his father remarried and moved into his new bride's home. Otto and his brother, Irv, stayed in their father's house, a few blocks away.

In May of 1938, Otto married Elsie Stadtler. They lived on Chicago's south side, where they had two boys-Richard and Donald. He was drafted into the Army during World War II and served in an engineering unit, building airstrips on Okinawa.

After the war, Otto and Elsie built a house for themselves at 25 North Medill in Northlake, and another one next door for Elsie's mother. For most of this time, he worked for LinkBelt. By 1955, Otto was working as a machinist for American Can Company in Maywood, Illinois.

In early-1956 the family moved to a larger house in Elmhurst, Illinois, where they had two more boys-twins, David and Dennis. When American Can Company closed, in 1973, Otto became a maintenance engineer at Elmhurst College.

Otto died on February 6, 2002 from renal failure that accompanied diabetes. By the time he passed, he had had a leg amputated and had lost his sight almost completely. He was father of four (Richard, Donald, David and Dennis), grandfather of seven (Glen, Dawn, Bret, Amanda, Eric, Heidi and Alexander), and great-grandfather of four (Ryan, Abigail, Mykola and Olivia).
