In late October of 1998, Honduras was devastated by Hurricane Mitch, the
second deadliest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. Eleven thousand
people were killed and three million were left either homeless or
severely affected. The storm caused over $5 billion in
damage.
San Pedro Sula, the second largest city in Honduras, is the site for a mission of the Episcopal World Relief Fund called Faith, Hope, and Joy. Each week for the past three years, groups of 2-25 Episcopalians have traveled to Honduras to volunteer in the rebuilding of San Pedro Sula. In addition to over 200 homes, a church, school (see above picture), community center, medical center, and septic and water plants have been built. The 520 square foot homes are made of concrete (mixed by hand) and have two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, and septic system. Over 1200 victims of Hurricane Mitch have benefited from the mission. They work hand in hand with the volunteers in the spirit of community and fellowship in Christ. The houses cost $3,100 and are interest free for the ten
years families have to pay them off. Applicants are carefully
screened and the houses are deeded to the women.
Bob and Carole Knops, members of St. Augustine's, have made two trips to San Pedro Sula and have remarked on the hard work, friendly atmosphere, and great feeling helping others has given them. Peter and Betty Budde, also members of St. Augustine's, are volunteers teaching in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. Peter teaches seventh and eighth grades, and Betty is an interpreter in the kindergarten class. They have been there since August of 2001 and will return in June of 2002. Faith, Hope, and Joy will be completed in June of 2002, after 3 1/2 years of relentless efforts. Future missions are being planned, such as a relief effort in Belize (devastated by Hurricane Iris), and earthquake ravished El Salvador. Related links: |
