Community Profile of Rhinelander, Wisconsin

With 232 lakes in a 30-mile radius, Rhinelander offers many opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing, water skiing, and jet skiing.

The loon is just one of many different species of wildlife that can be seen throughout the  Great Northwoods.

Rhinelander is a northern Wisconsin community located along the Wisconsin River about 200 miles north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and about the same distance east of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.  The population is ethnically diverse having been the "melting pot" for many nationalities over the years.  The people are friendly and welcome newcomers warmly.  There is a full-time police and fire department within the city limits and the K-12 school district includes eight elementary schools, one junior high, and one high school.  In addition there are also three private parochial schools and Nicolet Technical College.  Childcare facilities are available at 14 locations within the community.  The major employers in Rhinelander are Wausau-Mosinee Paper Company, Precision Twist Drill, Print Pack, Foster & Smith, and St. Mary's Hospital.  We are proud of our 90-bed hospital and the competent medical professionals therein.

Tourism is also a great source of income to the area.  This region is a four-season recreational area with average summer temperatures in the mid 70's and average winter temperatures in the mid 20's.  The average rainfall is 30 inches with 59 inches of snow being part of the annual precipitation.  There are several river systems, national and state forests, and approximately 232 lakes with many public boat landings, all of which are located within a 30-mile radius of the city.  The immediate area offers ATV trails, hiking and cross country ski trails, and Rhinelander is located less than two hours from the upper peninsula of Michigan which has many prime downhill ski facilities.  Other recreational facilities available within Rhinelander include an excellent 18-hole public golf course, a bowling alley, two movie theaters, parks, one indoor ice arena, tennis courts, a logging museum, and boat and snowmobile rentals.

The city of Rhinelander continues to expand and grow with newly constructed businesses such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart Super Center (the largest Wal-Mart in Wisconsin), Mailboxes Etc., Menard's, and OfficeMax.
