Spartanburg's 875 foot elevation
above sea level allows for the presence of 4 seasons with an
average July temperature of 77.4°F (25.2°C) and an average January
temperature of 37.0°F (2.8°C). Although temperatures may range
from 5°F to near 100°F, these extremes are relatively rare.
Housing choices run the gamut from your own "farm" to luxury
or resort housing! Townhomes and condominium properties are available,
as well as subdivision homes in every price range. All are within easy
driving distance of work, school or recreation. A wide variety of rental
properties are available, as well as facilities for independent retirement
living or for more assisted-living care as needed. Approximately thirty
religious denominations are represented in the area.
Spartanburg County is divided into 7 school districts where over 38,000
(1994-95) students are nurtured. Schools in the county are
able to teach all ranges of student abilities. Higher education
opportunities are offered at Spartanburg Technical College,
Converse College, Wofford College, University of South Carolina at Spartanburg,
Spartanburg Methodist College and at Sherman College
of Straight Chiropractic. The location of the Carolina
Panthers Summer training camp at Wofford College is just
one of the many sports-oriented activities available to residents. AYSO
soccer, softball leagues, basketball and swimming are a few of
these programs. Six public and five private golf courses make finding
a tee time easy. Fifteen tennis courts, 33 city and county parks, 2
YMCAs and 9 health clubs mean that there is something to do for every
member of the family! Fishermen and boaters enjoy Lakes Cooley,
Blalock, Bowen, and other smaller lakes to accommodate their hobbies.
Spartanburg has had an unprecedented period of growth in the last few
years. The county is estimated to be the residence for over 250,000

U.S. population! BMW's North American Manufacturing Plant
was just one of the more recent additions to over 100 firms representing
15 countries that have located in the county over a period of nearly
30 years. Creating over 600 new jobs, many BMW suppliers have also located
in the area. Spartanburg has the highest per-capita diversified foreign
investment in the United States. The intersections of I-26 and I-85
make Spartanburg's location ideal for reaching Atlanta (3.3 driving
hours), Charlotte, NC (2 hrs), Washington, DC (9 hrs), Great Smoky Mountains
National Park (2 hrs) and Myrtle Beach (5 hrs). Greenville-Spartanburg
International Airport makes more distant locations just an easy 15 mile
drive from home.
Health care is not a concern in Spartanburg County. The Spartanburg
Regional Healthcare System and Mary Black Memorial Hospital provide
residents with some of the best in personal and technological care available
today.
The arts are well served in Spartanburg and nearby areas. The
Arts Partnership coordinates, supports, and promotes more than 65 visual,
performing affiliate organizations, including the Arts Center which
acts as a clearinghouse for all arts information. Eight art galleries,
the Spartanburg Little Theatre and Youth Theatre and the Spartanburg
Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra attract large audiences each season.
A new 105,000 square foot library facility was opened during the Spring
of 1997. Various municipalities and groups hold many festivals a year.
The BMW Zentrum Center coordinates tours of their facility.
Fifty shopping centers with over 500 stores mean that locating just
the item you need is never a problem! The largest centers are Westgate
Mall, Hillcrest Mall, and Carolina Factory Stores.
