MICK DOHERTY
Student Evaluations

All of the comments listed below are transcribed exactly from written evaluations on file with the respective schools where the classes were held.

Not all classes I taught had extensive written evaluation procedures, but these 11 examples represent eight different classes.

And yes, of course these are some of the very best comments. After all, authors don't put "Eh, I guess it was OK" comments on their new book's dustjacket.

But for what it's worth, the students who submitted these comments received four A's, four B's and three C's, respectively.

Technical & Professional Communication
Spring 1997

"I would like to thank Mick Doherty for making this class the most enjoyable one I have ever taken at RPI. Mick, you are an excellent teacher, but your scope is not limited to just that role. I know I can count on you ... as well. You have not treated us like students. You have treated us like peers. Mick, you truly are a great teacher. I appreciate what you have done for us. Before I knew you were leaving [RPI], I recommended your class to all my friends. I personally will never forget the job you have done. Most importantly, I learned, I developed, I opened my mind. I grew as a person."

"I can not say how much I enjoyed this class. When I envisioned college, the eagerness to learn and enjoyment in learning I experience in this class was was I saw. Unfortunately, this is the only class I have really experienced it in. As I have said before, this class made me THINK. Not adjust equations and solve, but THINK. Some of my views were challenged by what we discussed and in some areas my eyes were opened to thinkg I would never have guessed at. This class was a great experience for me ... If this was the only class I can take anything out of in college, I would be an engineer who didn't know engineering but could think up a storm."

"Mick Doherty is one of the best instructors I've ever had ... [he] interacts well with class. Works more like a coach than a teacher. (RPI students know how to do the work, they just need some motivating.) He knew technology and course material well. He was willing to bend over backwards for students."

"Mick Doherty created a great learning environment. He is easy to talk to, always easy to reach for help over e-mail and encourages the class to interact together. I think that Mick is an excellent teacher also because he's not just the teacher but a resource and a guide which enables him to come down to our level which in turn helps us to talk to him. There aren't any real weak points. I rate him very highly."

"This is the best course I have ever taken, and no matter what else I take, it always will be. Instead of feeding our already super-inflated egos, he taught us how to learn and stay on task. He's awesome."

"Wow. All I can say is that this was a dynamite class. It was interesting beyond compare. The material was thought-provoking and Mike created an environment in which learning was the chief objective. Without a doubt, Mike is the most helpful, successful teacher I have this semester."

"Doherty's class was truly a new experience for me. He is an incredible instructor and I would encourage anyone to take a class that he may be teaching. I love this class and it changed my life."

"Mike was excellent. He served as a great coordinator to keep discussions on track. He was also very open to meetings outside of class. I enjoyed his help. His suggestions and comments often inspired independent thoughts. I would rate his effectiveness as excellent. No, wonderful!

Spring 1993 -- comments are from different sections
"Of all my years of schooling, this has been the only English course that I found interesting. It wasn't just writing boring papers, but actually made me think about thing I was interested in. Great job."

"Mike makes a student want to learn and get good grades, I don't know how he does it ... he just does! I feel confident with my writing now. However, I also know that it takes hard work, and a lot of time to make a paper good. Mike is the best teacher I have had so far."

"He's great! Mike is lot of fun and I enjoy getting up for an 8:00 class, as strange as it sounds, because he makes it fun and I'm actually getting something out of it."
