Opening Day a Ranger April Fool
A LONG TRIP ... A lot of things went right for Texas on Opening Day against Toronto in San Juan. Alex Rodriguez had base hits in his first two Ranger at-bats. Ken Caminiti had more hits in one game (two) than in all of spring training. Ruben Mateo had two extra base hits, though he was stranded at third base both times. The problem came -- and get ready to hear a lot of this in 2001 -- with the pitching, as Rick Helling muddled through six mediocre innings and Mark Petkovsek allowed all four batters he faced to score. Helling will still win 14-18 games, but this Texas team might only win 80 or so.

Tearing it Up
MOST ADDED/DROPPED ... AL-only league owners are paying attention, as breakout lefty Doug Davis is the third-most added player to AL-only leagues and is now on 63% of rosters. Go get him while you still can. Meanwhile, John Wetteland and Justin Thompson, neither of whom will pitch this year, have both entered the "Most Dropped" sweepstakes, though why they are still even on 30% and 20% of rosters, respectively, is anyone's guess. Over in universe leagues, Ruben Mateo has cracked the Top 20 "Most Added" but is still available in 81% of leagues. Go -- right NOW -- and get him.

Slumping
SAYONARA, RUNNING GAME ... Johnny Oates shocked the world in the first inning of the first game of the year. Rusty Greer led off the game with a HBP, and actually ran on the ensuing 3-2 pitch to Randy Velarde, something that might not have happened in all of 2000. The new Runnin' Rangers were short-lived as the inevitable strikemout-throwemout double play emptied the bases for A-Rod's debut. Oates has said a number of times he doesn’t want to run himself out of potential big innings, and this experience should solidify the fact that no Texas player will steal more than 10-15 bases this year.

At the Plate
LIVE BY THE RANGERS, DIE BY THE RANGERS ... Many of the ESPN correspondents have shared details of their own fantasy drafts recently, and it does seem appropriate to share how much of our own advice we're taking. In the 11th annual Bowling Green Neo-Historic Base-Ball League draft, I stocked my AL-only roster with plenty of current and former Rangers, as Mateo, Davis, Pudge Rodriguez, David Segui, Royce Clayton, Tim Crabtree, Jeff Zimmerman and Aaron Sele all found their way onto my 31-man roster. If Davis and Crabtree in particular succeed, then so will I -- and so will Texas.

Probable Starters

From the Rubber
WISHFUL THINKING? ... For some reason, those wacky kids who tend to the Texas Rangers clubhouse page here at ESPN have listed Justin Thompson as the probable starter for Texas against Anaheim in the April 4 game of that upcoming series. Thompson is on the 60-day DL and will likely not pitch this season. That said, even with the injury, how much worse could he do than actual scheduled starter Darren Oliver? If it matters to your lineup, the Davis and Helling starts listed at the right for April 6-7 may be flip-flopped to keep Helling on a five-day rotation. Don't worry, Davis will be the team's #2 starter by June.

On the Mend
ANOTHER CATCHING HASEL ... Here's hoping that you Pudge owners who've seen my consistent advice to pick up Bill Haselman as insurance completely ignored me. Haselman had a bone spur removed from his right (throwing) elbow and will miss up to eight weeks. Texas purchased the contract of good-field, no-hit (and no fantasy value) C Doug Mirabelli from the Giants as a stopgap, but Mirabelli took a fastball to the elbow in Saturday’s exhibition and may be questionable. Gabe Kapler, Ricky Ledee, Francisco Cordero and Dan Kolb all joined Haselman and Thompson on the season-opening DL.

Recent Call-ups
SIERRA NO MORE ... Constraints of the 40-man roster and lack of minor league options for certain players helped Jonathan Johnson make the team out of camp as the 12th pitcher on the staff. He won't be around long. Alas, poor Ruben Sierra -- he played well all spring, and of all things, even showed a flair for clubhouse leadership. But all that earned him was plane fare to Oklahoma City.
